Beginning Band – Sub Plan

Goal of the Day: Quiet, independent work + reinforce note names/fingerings

1. Opening (2–3 min)

• Take attendance

• Students should be seated in assigned seats immediately

• Reminder:
  “Today is a quiet work day. No talking while video is playing.”

2. MusicRacer (10 minutes)

Students go to:
👉 MusicRacer.com/comp

They should:

• Work on Level C

  • Note Names game

  • Fingerings game

Sub script:

“You should be actively playing the game the entire time. If you finish, restart and improve your score.”

3. Independent Silent Work + Video (remainder of class)

• Students may:

  • Work on missing assignments from other classes

  • Read or do schoolwork

• Must remain:

  • Silent

  • In their seats

Percussionists:

• Move to front of room

• Sit next to a focused partner

• If behavior becomes an issue → sub may reseat

4. Video (play during work time)

Quick context to read:

“Animusic creates computer-animated instruments where both the music and visuals are digitally created. The instruments you see are imaginary but designed to match the sound.”

5. Expectations / Management

• No talking during video

• Stay seated

• Phones only if used for schoolwork

• If needed:

  • Move seats

  • Separate students

Advanced Band – Sub Plan

Goal of the Day: Begin marching prep + percussion cadence learning

1. Opening (3–5 min)

• Take attendance

• Students stay inside first

2. Whole Group Check (IMPORTANT)

Before going outside, confirm:

• Winds:

  • Have instruments

  • Ready to mark time

• Percussion:

  • Have sticks/pads

  • Access to cadence music

If not ready → stay inside and fix first

3. Winds – Marching Basics (with Drum Majors)

Students will:

• Work with assigned drum majors

• Review:

  • Marking time

  • Step-offs

  • Basic marching posture

Sub role:

• Supervise and support

• Drum majors lead instruction

Script if needed:

“Follow your drum majors—they are in charge of leading today.”

4. Percussion – Cadence Work

Students go to:

They should work on:

• Tadpole

• Earthquake

Focus:

• Sticking accuracy

• Steady pulse

5. Location Decision

• Start inside

• Move outside only if:

  • Group is focused

  • Everyone is prepared

6. Expectations

• Drum majors = student leaders

• No wandering

• Stay on assigned task

• Sub may:

  • Keep group inside if needed

  • Redirect off-task students

Voices of Harmony Choir – Sub Plan

Goal of the Day: Light, focused review before concert (no over-singing)

1. Opening (3–5 min)

• Take attendance

• Students seated in choir formation if possible

2. Concert Reminder (Read aloud)

“Tonight’s concert is at Wenatchee High School Auditorium at 6:30 PM.
You should arrive by 6:00 PM in concert black.”

3. Repertoire Run-Through (gentle, not full voice)

Pieces:

1. The Rising of the Moon

2. A Long Way from Home

3. Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel

Instructions:

• Sing marked / medium voice only

• Focus on:

  • Entrances

  • Cutoffs

  • Memory

4. Suggested Flow

• Sing through each piece once

• If time:

  • Review tricky spots

  • Practice transitions between songs

5. Key Reminders for Students

• No yelling / over-singing today

• Save voices for tonight

• Stay focused and supportive

6. Behavior Expectations

• Follow choir norms:

  • Eyes up

  • No side conversations

• Sub may:

  • Pause rehearsal if talking continues

  • Reset attention before continuing

Quick Stabilizers (for all classes)

If anything starts to drift:

• Reset with:
  “We are going to pause and restart with full focus.”

• Use seating changes early

• Keep instructions short and clear

This keeps the day calm and prevents escalation (very aligned with your system and Newell-style flow).
