Band Boosters - All parents of band members as well as interested community members. They provide support for the GA Band i.e. chaperoning, fundraising, encouraging kids to join band…
Band Binder – A required notebook with plastic sheet protectors for show music and official charts.
Band Truck & Trailer – Vehicles owned by the Band Boosters used to haul instruments, equipment, and uniforms to band practices, competitions, and parades.
Battery – The marching drummers that provide the cadence.
Baldric – This is the “swishy” part of the uniform that attaches at the shoulder. The uniform has two, a sparkly one and a plain/other/normal one. Always bring both to any place students are wearing the uniforms.
Color Guard/Auxiliary – The flag team that performs with the marching band at parades and band comps.
Comp – Short for a marching band field show competition. The GA Band competes in approximately five band comps during the fall.
Dot Book – A heavy-duty small spiral notebook that hangs around your neck. Instructions for the field marching pattern are drawn in the book. Colored chips used to help mark your spot on the field while learning the marching routine.
Dots – Any small, personalized item that will not blow away i.e. poker chips, dominoes… They are used to mark placement on the field while learning the routine. You must be able to locate your dots easily.
GA – Golden Apple Band.
Pep Folders – Small flip folders used to hold pep music. These can be purchased at a local music store. These are not used during band camp, but are needed during football and basketball seasons.
“The Pit” – The group of percussionists that plays stationary instruments i.e. the gong, timpani drums.., on the sidelines during the field show competition.
Retreat – All the competing bands return to the field at the end of the competition for the awards ceremony.
Shako-the hat with the feather. It also has its own carrying case. All band members wear this, except the Sousaphone (marching tuba) who wear berets.
