The Wellington Footlights Society is delighted to present its second production for 2019, the Stephen Sondheim classic, Company.
Robert is about to turn 35 and is surprised by all of his good and crazy married friends on his birthday, all of whom are urging him to take the next step in his life... settle down and get married. Will Robert choose one of his three girlfriends to see if marriage is what it's really about, will he remain single or is he happy just being alive?

Since first hearing the soundtrack for Company five years ago, it quickly became one of my favourite musicals. So when Footlights announced they were looking for expressions of interest for a Director, I knew I had to throw my hat in the ring. And through the journey of pre-production and rehearsals I was so pleased that I did. The members of Footlights have been incredibly welcoming and professional throughout the entire process. I would like to thank Michael Stebbings, Laura Gardner and Margaret Hill who have been particularly helpful along the way.
Something special about Company is how different every production is. Next year will mark 50 years since the show first premiered and since then it’s appeared in concert form, gender bent, in small warehouse theatres and, of course, on Broadway. Approaching the direction of the show has been more challenging than any other musical I’ve worked on in the past. There is so much room for interpretation in the script; the writing is intelligent and layered and the music is Sondheim’s (need I say more). But the cast and production team has been so incredible in supporting one another to get this show to where it needs to be. Our musical director Shawn Condon, production manager Nick Lerew, and choreographer Katty Lau have been involved since the start and I’ve been so thankful for their support and vision.
Finally, I hope you enjoy our production of Company. We’ve had a great time putting it together, and we are looking forward to sharing it with you.
