Afterschool Clubs, Activities & Sports

CLUBS AND AFTERSCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Clubs and activities are offered for two reasons. The first is to meet student interest and demand in a particular area.  The second is to share with students a special talent or skill that a teacher has. The club and activity program changes from year to year. We welcome your suggestions for new clubs and activities and encourage your active participation in this program. New clubs may be formed each year to address the interests of students.

WMS is proud to offer a variety of after school clubs and activities for students to join. Club and activity offerings change from year to year, but some may include the Yearbook, the Math Club, the Drama Club, and many others of varying interests so that all students may find something to enjoy.  An Activities Fair is held every year in September after school. The date will be announced over the public address system so that students may attend. During the fair, there is a station for all club offerings for the current school year. The club advisors are usually present to greet students and give them more information about the club.  Students sign up during the fair and are given a list of meeting times and places for the clubs. There are no fees, and all students are welcome to participate in clubs and all intramural after-school activities. Please be advised that there are no after school activities on days when faculty meetings are scheduled.  If you need assistance with the activity fee, please contact the school counselor or the principal.

MIDDLE SCHOOL INTRAMURAL PROGRAM

The intramural program involves as many students as possible in a variety of sports and fitness activities. We encourage students of all levels of ability and skill to participate. Students enjoy themselves and make new friends, while enhancing personal fitness, skill development and social skills. Students are urged to attend activities whenever they can fit it into their afternoon schedules. Students must obtain an activities card in order to participate. Please contact the main office for more information about payment and any questions you may have.

The intramural schedule is posted in several places, including the entrance to the cafeteria and the newsletter, and daily announcements are made at the end of each school day and on the school website.  Sessions run from 2:30-3:25 Monday through Thursday. Each activity program varies but usually runs six to eight sessions.

The program is designed to appeal to all grade levels, both boys and girls. We offer a variety of team sports such as indoor soccer, floor hockey and basketball along with racket sports, such as tennis and badminton. Open gym is popular for those participants who like to spontaneously choose a game for the afternoon. Dance activities like hip hop and step enhance the program. The fitness center is open after school for those interested in working out. A fencing program is offered on a limited basis to those students willing to make an 8-week commitment. The program is expanding as we continue to assess student’s interests. We encourage all students to be involved in after school physical activity that promotes healthy lifestyles.

INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS

Students in Grade 8 are eligible for interscholastic sports.  Those sports are cross-country, football, volleyball, wrestling, field hockey, soccer, basketball, track & field, baseball, and softball. Grade 6 and 7 students can participate in cross-country and track & field.  Students must be in school in order to practice or play in a game. Extenuating circumstances will be handled by the coach and administration on an individual basis. Students excused from fitness and health class for medical reasons cannot participate in a team practice or games for the duration of their absence from Fitness and Health.
