258 You and the Law H / 256 You and the Law ACP

Gr 10 - 12 | 3 Credits | Semester-Long | 5x per Cycle

* Students selecting this course must register for course 258 and will be given the option to select to take it at the ACP level at the start of the course.

The course is designed for students motivated by the desire to learn about the role of the legal system and the responsibilities and rights as a citizen of the United States. In the course, students will be expected to read a text, various legal cases, and some other writings. Students are expected to fully participate in all aspects of class, which will include interactive experiences and simulations, as well as more traditional instruction. Some of the major areas of study will include an introduction to law & the legal system, criminal law & juvenile justice, civil law, family law, and individual rights and civil liberties. In lieu of a final examination, students will participate in a mock trial, and write and present a book review.
