246 Gender and Sexuality H / 247 Gender and Sexuality ACP

Gr 11 - 12 | 3 Credits | Semester-Long | 5x per Cycle

* Students selecting this course must register for course 246 and will be given the option to select to take it at the ACP level at the start of the course.

This course introduces students to the interdisciplinary study of gender and sexuality. The course will take both a historical and contemporary focus. Students will analyze shifts in the social construction of gender and sexuality across time, as well as look at the way gender and sexuality are defined today and the impact these definitions have on the individual. Historical topics covered in the course include: the shifting meaning of the family, feminisms and women’s movements, changing definitions of masculinity, the history of the LGBTQ community, and gender theory. Contemporary topics include: gender socialization, inequality and difference, human sexuality, the politics of the body, the economics of the household, LGBTQ movements, and the intersection between gender and race.
