704 Introduction to Child Development
Gr 9 - 12 | 1.5 Credits | Quarter-Long | 5x per Cycle
Introduction to Child Development is a course that considers fundamental perspectives and critical thoughts on social, emotional, biological and cognitive aspects of human development from birth through year five. Field studies in the child lab classroom are conducted and emphasize the role of observation, interpretation, and analysis of behaviors to prepare students for the Child Study Lab class. Concepts such as learning, social interaction, sensation and perception, thinking, memory, and personality are explored.
Essential Skills
Identify developmental domains and milestones from the prenatal period through early childhood.
Describe and evaluate the value of play and the practice of “serve in return” to early childhood development.
Research and share understanding of foundational theories of development through multi-modal approaches.
Consider the role and impact of media (books, music, television, apps, etc) on the development of young children across domains.
