Unit 2 - Reading to Learn

This unit teaches students how to navigate expository nonfiction with meaning and engagement. The first part of the unit focuses on teaching students how to determine key ideas and details. The second part focuses on paraphrasing, synthesizing, and thinking and talking about texts with a partner. The third part focuses on how to make sense of new vocabulary: often domain-specific words and phrases. Students will also explore the structure of narrative nonfiction and develop the skills that they will need to access hybrid nonfiction texts.
