Unit 1 - Launching

The focus of this unit is launching readers’ workshop and helping students become avid readers. Third graders will fashion a literate identity for themselves, and fully participate in a classroom community that thinks and talks about books. Children will develop habits that support independence and agency, such as reflecting on their reading lives and setting goals, keeping reading portfolios, and being independent problem-solvers and decision-makers. The unit will culminate in a celebration of students’ accomplishments. They will reflect on their work and note the discoveries they have made about themselves as they read throughout the unit.
