This is what the workshop model in math workshop (and actually most all subject areas looks like in our classrooms.
There is always an introduction to grab the attention of our students and directions and modeling.
Then students have an opportunity while still altogether to discuss, try it out or ask questions if they are confused.
When they are released into the workshop they are either independent or working in partnerships to get the hands on practice. Teachers circle the class or work in small groups during this time.
Finally, we close with a celebration or sharing of big ideas, problems that may have arisen or successes.
Below you will find the specific focus or learning for each of our 8 units. However, I strongly recommend, that you read the note to families that comes home in your child's communication folder whenever we begin a new unit. I also recommend that you read and try the ideas that come home mdway through each unit. In this math note, families will learn what they can do at home to support their first grader.
