Help your student wait.
Leaving a Kindergarten classroom where there are two adults and 21 kids and transitioning to a First Grade room with one adult and the same number of children can be challenging. You can help your student by letting them wait a little bit at home, too. We know that waiting is not easy, but letting kids know it is okay to wait and to be a little bored can help them in the long run.
Discuss LUNCH and DISMISSAL plans each day.
First graders are able to know and remember their plans.
Coach your student through problem solving rather than solving it for them.
Ask your student, "What could you do if X happens?"
Celebrate MISTAKES as well as PROGRESS.
Mistakes help us learn. They are a BIG part of the learning process.
Give your student responsibilities.
First graders can be great helpers. They can keep track of their backpacks. They can help clean up in your house. We know because they do it all day at school!
Find BALANCE.
We work very hard here at school. Sometimes your student might be too exhausted to do more work at home. Prioritize books in book bags for after school or evening or even the next morning at breakfast, whatever works for your family, knowing that sometimes we all need downtime, too.
