•Have your child survey family members about their choice for meals. They can ask, “Do you want pancakes or waffles?” This activity gives them practice in forming questions and counting (e.g., two people want pancakes and three people want waffles).
•Name categories for the types of foods on the plate: colors, textures (e.g., crunchy vs. smooth), vegetables.
•Talk about the steps of preparing food: “First put the sauce on the pizza shell, then put cheese on top, then mushrooms, then put it in the oven.” You can also take pictures of each step to print out and later talk about how something was made.
•Read books about eating, such as: Picky Nicky, The Seven Silly Eaters, Gregory The Terrible Eater, Little Pea (all available as read-alouds online).
