Phonetic principles:
"Inventive spelling" or "best guess spelling" is a writing technique that is used in primary classrooms in order to help students express their ideas in writing. During word work or Fundations, I will introduce phonetic principles that will help your child's spelling development. Below are the listed the phonetic principles taught in first grade. When your chid is writing at home, please do not spell words for him/her. Learning how to stretch out words and write the sounds that your child hears is a necessary skill to have to be an independent writer.
• Letter formation: using Fundations paper as guide lines. Tall letters start at the "cloud line." Most lower case letters start at the "plane line." Most letters stop at the "grass line." Some letters like g, j, y,p,q) go below the grass line to the "worm line."••
• CVC words: Consonant-short vowel-consonant (mat, met, lip, mop, cup, etc)
• Bonus letters: f, l, s, and z (cliff, still, class, buzz, etc)
• Digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh)- 2 letters that make one sound
• Blends (fl, br, sc, sw, gr, etc) - 2 letter that each make a sound that are blended together
• Glued sounds (am, an, all, ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, unk) Letter that are blended together with a vowel sound
• Vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ea, ey) Team together to make a vowel says its long sound
• Irregular vowel teams (oi, oy) Vowels team together to change the vowels sound
• R-controlled vowels (ar, or, er, ir, ur) Bossy -r controls the vowels sound
• Digraph blends (-nch) The consonant sound is blended in with the digraph
• Closed syllable (flock, flat, shed, met, etc) A syllable with a short vowel sound. The vowel is "closed in" by the consonant.
• Open syllable (we, see, etc) The vowel is making a long sound.
