First grade behavior management focuses on teaching and practicing expected behaviors. 1H is a community of learners. We developed and signed a classroom contract of following 3 basic rules: Respect yourself, Respect others, Respect materials. In addition, all members of the Fiske community practice the FISKE Fundamentals (Fair, Inclusive, Safe, Kind, Encouraging).
In order to support the children’s effort in their behavior, each class uses a positive reinforcement system in the form of a “pom-pom” jar to reward whole class or individual behavior. The whole class earns a large pom-pom when all students have contributed to a behavioral goal (e.g. all are working quietly and sustain focus during a learning block). An individual can earn a small pom-pom for the class if he/she has gone above and beyond behavioral expectations or if he/she has successfully put forth effort toward an individual behavior goal of his/her own. When the pom-pom jar is full, the class receives a class-established reward, such as a free choice time.
Inevitably, young children are not always consistent in achieving expected behaviors. There are natural consequences to unexpected behaviors that range from verbal redirection from the teacher to completing with a teacher a FISKE Fundamental Reflection Sheet . If a child needs to complete 3 processing sheets with a teacher (in a relatively short timespan), then that child will have a discussion with the principal Mrs. McGregor. Individual children with exceptional behavioral challenges may be supported with their own behavior plan.
Parents are a key component to each child's learning experience. Parents will be notified on an individual basis to discuss their child's successes and areas of concerns. As always, please notify me if you have concerns or questions about your child's behavior.
