Working in the healthcare field for over 30 years, I have seen how broken the system is. Medications are prescribed for symptoms before ever considering the patient and their abilities to make positive lifestyle changes. If given the proper education, exploring and understanding all the options, they could significantly improve their conditions and lives. Medications certainly have their place in healthcare, but it should never be the only solution for long term health and wellbeing.
Change is never easy for anyone. Then there are times we are taking action, only to feel we are spinning our wheels, never getting anywhere. That is where it is beneficial to partner with a coach, knowing you are making educated decisions to figure out what approach makes sense for you to take, one small step at a time. You have the power to take control of your health and life and not let it control you. Lets talk and find out what is important to you.
Working with a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) can help you achieve far superior outcomes and health benefits when you are empowered with robust information, support and tools.
If it is assumed one has 2-4 doctor visits a year (10-20 minutes) and maybe (and that is a hard maybe) 2 appointments with an educator (30-60 minutes) then it is fair to say there are about 4 hours a year of help from your diabetes healthcare team and the rest is left up to you.
If you are feeling you've got this, I am genuinely happy for you. But if you are looking for ways to improve or experience low motivation, frustration or have questions swirling in your head like these below, then maybe it is time to reach out and move forward:
Are some of these symptoms from my medications? Am I taking my medication correctly?
What foods am I supposed to be eating? Is there a specific diet for me?
What caused my blood sugar to go up when I never changed a thing?
Why am I feeling such a low mood?
Why is it so hard to lose weight now?
What does stress, sleep and activity have to do with my blood sugars?
Should I be checking my blood sugars? My doctor didn't tell me to so how could it benefit me? What would I do with the numbers?
How often should I check my blood sugars? What is considered a high number?
What are the options for checking my blood sugars? Do I need to prick my finger or is there some other way to check blood sugars?
Am I drinking enough water? Could I be drinking too much?
What about alcohol? Can I have a drink? if so, how many?
Partner with me and I will help you feel confident in your ability to manage your diabetes and health with confidence.
Consulting with a CDCES can help clarify any confusion or misinformation you may have about your diabetes, health and self-management. Coaching can help you control diabetes instead of it controlling you.
Every aspect of your life impacts your health and wellbeing. My approach is to first understand what it is you feel is important and what you value. How do you feel you are managing your health and life in general? If there are needs we have to address before moving on to the narrow focus of diabetes, we can tackle that first. We work to figure out what would be the best place to start, then break down the barriers, identify your strengths to implement small steps to continually build on, making them strong habits that just become a part of what you do.

I approach nutrition with the understanding that we are all different and there is not one "perfect" way to eat. Each of us is an experiment of one. Whether you are committed to following a diet that is plant-based, keto, Mediterranean, vegan, intermittent fasting, or any of the many nutrition approaches out there, I can support you in your efforts. I attend several conferences yearly, staying current with the research, controversial topics and trends with and without substance.
I am not a dietician and can not prescribe you a diet, but I can certainly offer what I have learned about nutrition in evidence based research, and in the success over the past 30+ years of nursing combined with 20 years of coaching. I know what impacts blood sugars, fat storage, muscle synthesis (growth), hormones and immune system.
I can help you learn about what foods improve your health and which ones take away health. I understand nutrition is not only about the quality, but also the timing, balance and quantity of your meals. You will be eating the rest of your days so lets make it work for you.
Movement is so important in living an active lifestyle for the rest of your days. I have trained with American Council on Exercise (ACE) and received my Personal Trainer Certificate. In addition, I also trained with GGS, specializing in safe and appropriate fitness for peri to post menopausal women. I can help you get started with your exercise goals in this area and continue to build on them. Positive change in your fitness level is more doable than you may believe.
I have coached 1000+ people over the years and the one thing that remains the same is the ability for people to stay consistent with their exercise intention. There are very few that come into coaching solid in this area. I can get you started with an exercise program that is personalized for you. Ongoing evaluation and coaching support will help this to become a sustainable habit.
Mild stress can be a good thing. It can get us moving closer to what we want to achieve or need to accomplish. It springs us into action. Chronic stress can wear you down over time. Sometimes one major event or a compilation of small events can lead to chronic health conditions if we don't work to resolve or correct our response to them.
If you are one that generally manages stress well, until you don't, such as an unexpected work project, temporarily over stretched schedule or dealing with a schedule that is not your own (like kids and parents needs) that triggers you and puts you on edge or has self-care temporarily non-existent, then taking a proactive approach to discover the triggers and response to them, then building your self-care toolbox can be so beneficial.
I will never discount anyone who has a life situation that has changed your world. Those things are real and they do happen. There is no putting on a "happy face" or being "grateful" for what is given to you. It is about getting through it, to the other side well and intact that matters. Healing and improved stress response never happens overnight, but it can happen. I have been there and know that pain. Building the resiliency muscle supports strength and wholeness.
Are you waking up tired, exhausted or like your sleep is disrupted with periods of waking and not getting back to sleep? Coaching can help get to the root cause of some of the habits and behaviors that are interfering with sleep patterns. Sleep issues are too important to not address if you are not waking up refreshed and at your best.
The consequences of poor sleep can be severe and greatly impact your quality of life in several areas which include Physical Health, Mental and Cognitive Impacts, Hormonal and Metabolic Effects, and Long Term .
Physical Health:
Weakened immune system, increased risk of heart disease and diabetes
Weight gain and slower metabolism
Chronic fatigue and poor coordination
Mental and Cognitive Impacts:
Impaired memory, focus, and decision-making
Increased stress, anxiety, and mood swings
Brain fog and reduced productivity
Hormonal and Metabolic Effects:
Imbalanced hunger hormones, leading to overeating
Higher blood sugar levels and insulin resistance
Reduced growth hormone production, affecting recovery
Long-term Risks:
Greater risk of chronic diseases and neurodegenerative conditions
Shortened lifespan due to cumulative health effects.
Working on all items above (Nutrition, Movement, Restorative Sleep, Stress) is what will get you to your goals. Partner with me and we can develop a realistic and sustainable plan and keep building on it so you find your personal success.
We can discuss meds/supplements that may be disrupting your efforts.
Have a conversation regarding hormone balance and gut health and the impact they have on achieving successful weight management.
Bring forward anything you need clarity around or just to better understand
anything you believe is contributing to your efforts.
People are naturally social beings. Finding the balance for you, whether extrovert or introvert, is important for longevity. Working with a coach can help you break out of your "rut" and connect with others. Discover what brings you joy and brainstorm ways to find and bring it into your life.
Social isolation is more common than most of us understand.
Social isolation significantly increased a person’s risk of premature death from all causes, a risk that may rival those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.1
Social isolation was associated with about a 50% increased risk of dementia.1
Poor social relationships (characterized by social isolation or loneliness) was associated with a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke.1
Loneliness was associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.
Loneliness among heart failure patients was associated with a nearly 4 times increased risk of death, 68% increased risk of hospitalization, and 57% increased risk of emergency department visits.1

"I have battled weight as far back as I can remember. I tried EVERY diet out there including gastric bypass surgery. All attempts failed me, eventually leading to being diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol that were not controlled on medications. Within 2 months of coaching with Brenda, my doctor reduced the dosage of 2 medications and had me stop another one! I finally feel confidence that I can do this! "
"I felt like my life changed in a blink of an eye when I was diagnosed with diabetes. I went from no meds or health issues to suddenly prescribed 4 medications and told to change my diet. I was instructed to stop eating white stuff like bread. Well, needless to say, that advice didn't help! I felt no energy. Didn't know what I was suppose to eat. After Brenda explained things in a way I could understand, figuring out what I needed to do came naturally. It wasn't easy but she helped me take it one step at a time and figure out what worked for me. All my labs are getting better. I am finally feeling hope!"
"I am so thankful I decided to do this coaching with Brenda. Just a game changer for me. No one ever explained things about my health like she has. She helped me understand and considered all parts of my life and health with every goal I set. Who knew fixing my sleep and stress could improve my labs so much! Finally didn't feel like just another number. "
