Dear Leman Families,
The end of the calendar year is a reflective time for many, including me and the rest of my admin team! As we wrap up 2024, we want to pause and express how truly grateful we are for your partnership this year. This school year, we are celebrating a tremendous shift in the climate and culture of our building. Our students are making greatg strides academically and in their display of our Leman Values every day. This is possible because of the tireless work of our faculty, staff, and families, who are holding our students to high expectations every single day. It is also possible because of your support.
Your children are such a gift to us. Each one of the 1,100 students who walk our halls every day has something to offer our school community. Spending time with them every day brings me so much joy! Even in the hardest moments of their middle school years, their remarkable spirits shine through. Whether in classrooms or in the cafeteria, at athletic events, performances, or outside at arrival or dismissal, I am constantly reminded that I am so blessed that this is my job!
We hope you enjoy some time together as a family over the next two weeks. We look forward to seeing your students back at school on Monday, January 6th!
Sincerely,
Maggie Lay
Principal

Mark your calendars: Trimester 1 Honor Roll Ceremony
The Trimester 1 Honor Roll Ceremony is on Wednesday, 12/11 from 5:00-6:00 PM. Families were notified via text message if their child will be recognized. If you believe that your child should be on the honor roll but did not receive a text message, please contact your grade level assistant principal: Matt Mordini (6th), Amy Martensen (7th), or Hannah Christie (8th).
December 2, 2024
Welcome to Trimester 2!
As we begin a new trimester, students will begin with a fresh start in the gradebook and in our late-to-class counts. Our students had a great first trimester!! In reflecting on their learning, we noticed some trends that we want to share:
Attendance matters! Students who miss school often have a challenging time catching up. December is a time when we see many families take their children out of school for extended leave. This is highly discouraged, as it creates gaps in your child's learning that are difficult to overcome.
Homework matters! Students who do not do their homework consistently are less prepared for quizzes and tests and do not as easily engage in learning during class. You can review our LMS Homework Policy by clicking here.
You are highly encouraged to check your child's planner daily. The planner should be coming home every night, with things written inside. If you notice that your child's planner is not coming home, or if it is blank, please contact us so that we can help get your child back on track!
Mark your calendars: Trimester 1 Honor Roll Ceremony
The Trimester 1 Honor Roll Ceremony is on Wednesday, 12/11 from 5:00-6:00 PM. If your child will be recognized for the honor roll or high honor roll, you will be notified early next week.
Cold Weather Reminders
Winter weather is upon us! It is time for students to pull out their hats, gloves, and coats for school. Students are permitted to wait inside upon arrival when the "feels like" temperature is 10 degrees or lower. We know that many middle schoolers hate wearing a coat (one of life's great mysteries!). Please do your best to make sure they carry their coat with them - we will do our best to make them put it on when they get here. Students must store their coats and other warm-weather gear in their lockers during the school day. If your family needs assistance with getting access to winter coats, please let us know.

After School Events
We love seeing our students at home athletic events! It is always great to see them cheering on our teams. As an additional security measure, students will need to show their school IDs at the door to enter home events unless they are with a parent. Students who need to purchase a new school ID can do so in the office.
November 11, 2024
DON'T MISS IT! Literacy Night is Tuesday!
6:00-7:30 PM
Use Door 1 on Joliet Street
This free event offers dinner, swag bags, raffle prizes, games and activities, vision screenings, and more! This is one of our most highly-attended events of the year. We hope to see you there!
Reminder: Parent Teacher Conferences
Leman Middle School will conduct Student-Led Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, November 21st from 4:00 PM - 7:30 PM and Friday, November 22nd from 7:30 AM - 7:00 PM. Leman utilizes a student-led conference model to engage you and your child in a conversation about their learning. Your child must attend the conference with you.
Thursday evening’s conferences are individually scheduled for specific students who are at risk academically or behaviorally. Your child’s teacher will contact you directly if this applies to your child.
All other students and their families are invited to attend conferences on Friday, November 22nd. You may come at any time that is convenient for your family. Recommended times, based on student last name, are listed below. You will begin the time slot with a student-led conference in our cafetorium. After your child presents his/her information to you, you may visit any of the other teachers on your child’s schedule. This gives you the flexibility to meet with the teachers of your choice. Teachers will have a sign-up process outside of their classroom so that if they are busy, you can add your name and come back. If you need assistance understanding the format of our conferences, please contact your child’s grade-level Assistant Principal.
November 4, 2024
Reminder: No School Tomorrow (Tuesday, November 5th) due to Election Day.
6th Grade Social Reminders
The 6th grade "Fall-oween" social, sponsored by the LMS Student Council, will take place on November 8th from 6:00-8:00 pm. As a reminder, tickets are $3 and must be purchased in advance from your student's advisory teacher. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The last day to purchase a ticket is Wednesday, November 6th. Students must attend a full day of school on the day of the social to attend. No bags or outside food/drink are allowed into the dance. Students will enter through door 8 on Hazel Street. Students may wear costumes. Costumes must be school-appropriate and cannot include masks, props, fake blood, or costume weapons. Students' faces must be visible in the costume. Students must stay at the social for the entire event. Please plan to pick up your student at 8:00 pm on Hazel Street. Students may not walk home from the social.
Phones in Bathroom
Students are doing a great job following expectations for cell phones throughout the day this year! Bathroom phone usage is one area that remains an issue. Beginning on Monday, November 11th, students will not be able to bring their phones into the bathroom with them. This expectation is consistent with that of the high school and we hope it will help students use the restroom more quickly. We have student supervisors stationed outside of our bathrooms throughout the day. Students will be asked to place their device in the basket with the supervisor before entering the bathroom.
AAPPL testing
This Wednesday, November 6th, students in Advanced Spanish will start taking the AAPPL assessment. This assessment will measure their Spanish fluency in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. They will test each day from 11/6-11/15. Please ensure your child is in school every day. Thank you!
October 28, 2024
Pictures and Retakes
Students received their school IDs on Friday, and any picture packets that your family may have ordered will come home early this week. Picture Retake Day will be on Wednesday. Students who wish to have their picture retaken will be called down to the library throughout the morning.
Traffic around Hazel Street
The city is currently in the process of completing road work on Bishop Street. We anticipate extended delays during student drop-off on Hazel Street in the mornings. In order to ensure your student is on time for school, we recommend having your student take the school bus or walk to school. If you have to drive your student to school, it is recommended that you plan to drop off on Hazel Street earlier than normal. Traffic on Hazel is less congested between 7:05 and 7:15 am.
Halloween Costumes
Leman students have earned the privilege of wearing Halloween costumes this year! They accomplished this by showing a significant decrease in dress code violations. Please note the following expectations about costumes:
All of our normal dress code expectations are still in place - students must be covered from shoulder to bottom and undergarments should not be visible.
No blood, guts, or gore in costumes.
No hats or hoods that obscure the face. Wigs are permitted as long as the face is completely visible.
NO WEAPONS OF ANY KIND, even if they are toys.
Sixth graders on the Blue team who are attending their field trip on Thursday will not be allowed to wear a costume to the museum.

If you need assistance understanding the format of our conferences, please contact your child’s grade-level Assistant Principal.
There will be no school for students on Friday, November 22nd. The administrators and staff of District 33 believe that conferences with your child’s teachers will be most helpful in understanding your child's educational progress. Students benefit substantially when teachers and parents share information and plan together. We are looking forward to meeting with you!

Staying Hydrated this Fall
Students are welcome and encouraged to drink water during the day at school. Coffee, Gatorade, and other beverages should not be brought to school due to the mess that they leave behind when spilled. Thank you for only sending your child to school with water! Additionally, this fall, we have seen many students with green Gatorade bottles that are used to squirt their peers with water. Using a water bottle in this manner will result in the water bottle being taken away until a parent comes to pick it up.
After School Event Attendance
We love to see our students at after school events! Our sports teams are always excited to have their friends and family cheering them on. Events are listed on our LMS calendar. Students who attend events must be picked up on Hazel Street at 5:45 PM or must be sitting with their parent/guardian.

Student Planners and Homework
To prepare students for the workload of high school, LMS is placing a heavy emphasis this year on the use of student planners and developmentally appropriate amounts of homework.
Research suggests that a student should be assigned homework in a quantity that correlates to their grade in school - ten minutes per year in school. You can expect your 6th grader to have about 60 minutes of homework per night, 70 minutes for 7th graders, and 80 minutes for 8th graders. All assignments should be written in your child's planner for your review each evening. If you have not seen your child's planner at home, ask them about it!
Does your child need a physical?
6th graders must have their physical on file by October 15th or they will be excluded from school starting on October 16th.
Winter sports are just around the corner! If your child wants to participate in basketball, wrestling, or cheerleading, now is the time to ensure that his/her physical is current.
Leman Bus Expectations
Does your student take a bus to school? Please review the Leman bus expectations with your students. You can view them here.
September 23, 2024
LMS Clubs Sign Up
We are excited to share that Leman offers a variety of clubs tailored to our students’ interests. We encourage all students to get involved in extracurricular activities, and clubs are a fantastic choice! Click here for a complete list of our clubs and descriptions. Please register as soon as possible, as some clubs will begin next week!
If your child regularly qualifies for a bus, a late/activity bus will be available for them, departing at 4:30 PM. If you choose this option, please ensure your child knows which stop to get off at to facilitate a smooth dismissal.
An electronic sign up form was sent via Parent Square on Sunday. Your student can also pick up a paper registration copy from their advisory teacher. We love to see our Chargers getting involved after school!
The Home Access Center has a lot of helpful information for families but is most often used to check on your child's progress in school. The Home Access Center is linked on the District 33 website, as well as the Leman website. If you need help with the Home Access Center, fill out a Help Request here: http://bit.ly/D33HACHelp.
When you log into the Home Access Center, you will see a row of buttons at the top that looks like the image below:
If you click on "Grades," you will see any report card grades that have been entered by your child's teacher. Teachers complete grade reports halfway through the trimester, and then again at the end of the trimester. However, you can also see how your student is doing on their daily classwork. To see their daily progress, click on "Classes." The assignments under the Classes tab are updated frequently. We recommend reviewing your child's grades once a week to see their progress.
If you ever have questions about how your child is doing, please reach out to their teacher via email or Parent Square. We would love to hear from you!
Student Attendance
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.
Make school attendance a priority by doing the following:
Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.
Help your children maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
Try not to schedule dental and non-urgent related medical appointments during the school day.
Keep your student healthy. If you are concerned about a contagious illness, call your school or health care provider.
If your children must stay home because they are sick, make sure they have asked teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom. You can contact teachers via Parent Square at any time to ask about assignments.
September 16, 2024
After School Event Attendance
We love to see our students at after school events! Our sports teams are always excited to have their friends and family cheering them on. Events are listed on our LMS calendar. Students who attend events must be picked up on Hazel Street at 5:45 PM or must be sitting with their parent/guardian.
A Note from the Health Office
All 6th grade students are required to submit a valid physical and record of immunizations to the Leman health office by October 15th. If you have not done so, please submit your student's records as soon as possible. After October 15th, students who do not have up-to-date records will not be able to attend school until they submit. If you have any questions, please contact the Nurse's Office at 630-293-6060 ext 5223.
Picture Day
Picture Day will be on Friday, September 20th. Order forms were sent home with students, or you can pre-order photos online at hrimaging.com. Students need to bring the order form with them to school on picture day, even if they are not purchasing pictures.
September 9, 2024
Curriculum Night is tomorrow!
We hope to see you from 6-8 PM at LMS. You can enter through Door 1 on Joliet or Door 8 on Hazel Street.
Tardies and Late to School
Students should be in their seats and ready to learn when the bell rings each period. In order to manage any late-to-school or tardy-to-class behavior, we will begin using our PerfectPass tardy monitoring system this Monday, September 9.
Parents will receive updates from PerfectPass if their student is late to school or tardy to class. These updates will include any consequences your student may receive. Please check your email for a message from PerfectPass and click "subscribe". You will then receive communication each time your student receives a PerfectPass.
If you already received messages last year, you do not need to re-subscribe. You will continue receiving updates.
Morning Drop Off
When dropping your child off on Hazel Street, pleased pull forward all the way and wait to release your child until instructed to do so by staff. This is for everyone's safety. DO NOT DROP OFF in our parking lots.
MAP Testing This Week
Students will take the MAP test in ELA and Math classes this week. This test is important for students, as it helps us place them into the correct classes and ensure that they have the right supports. For our 8th grade students, it is used as a data point for placement in high school classes. Students should make sure to bring their wired headphones to school and get plenty of rest!
Picture Day
Picture Day will be on Friday, September 20th. Order forms will go home with your student on Wednesday 9/11, or you can pre-order photos online at hrimaging.com.
Field Trip Volunteers
This year, parents will be invited to volunteer as chaperones on some field trips with their child. In order to serve as a chaperone, you would need to fill out our full volunteer packet and be fingerprinted by the district. Please call our office at 630-293-6060 if you would like to begin this process now!

August 26, 2024
School Start Times and Drop Off
Your child should arrive at LMS by 7:25 each morning. Students must be seated in first period, ready to learn when school starts at 7:35! Supervision on campus begins at 7:10 AM.
All students who are car-riders must be dropped off and picked up on Hazel Street. Hazel is a one way street with traffic flowing eastward from Joliet to Bishop (see map below).
Hazel Street traffic can be heavy, especially in the first few days of school. Students who live within walking distance of LMS should walk to and from school to alleviate unnecessary car traffic, and our bussers should take the bus. Please be kind to our staff on Hazel and only drop your students off in the designated areas.
Sixth grade families should be aware that students are only allowed to ride their assigned bus - they are not allowed to ride with friends. Please contact our front office if you have any questions about your child's bus stop. One of the new freedoms of middle school is that families may flexibly change how students get home from day-to-day, but your child needs to know how you want them to come home. Please have a conversation with your child about your expectations for getting home after school.

6th Grade: Matt Mordini, 630-293-6060 X5208, mordinim@wego33.org
7th Grade: Amy Martensen, 630-293-6060 X5229, martensena@wego33.org
8th Grade: Hannah Christie, 630-293-6060 X5209, christieh@wego33.org
Walk the Schedule Open House
Our annual Walk the Schedule event will be held on Monday, 8/26, from 3-5 PM. Students are free to walk the building and find their way from class to class. Students should bring an electronic or printed version of their schedule with them, as schedules are not provided at the event. This is an open-house style event, so you can come at any time from 3-5 PM. Some families come at 3 PM and stay for two hours. Some come at 4:30 and stay for 10 minutes. Up to you! There is no formal presentation during the event.
Supply Drop Off
Students are welcome to drop their supplies off in their Advisory classroom at Walk the Schedule. In middle school, most students wait to bring their supplies until the first day of school, but the advisory classrooms will be available if your child prefers to lighten their first-day load!
Cell Phones / Airpods / Smart Watches
Leman Middle School students are not able to use their cell phones, air pods, or other personal technology during the school day. This is a strictly-enforced policy. Students may carry their phones in their pockets or store them in their lockers, but may not have them out. In an emergency situation, please contact our office if you need to reach your child. The cell phone contract will be sent home with your student in the first couple of days of school. You can read it by clicking this link: Cell Phone Contract.
School Start Times and Drop Off
Your child should arrive at LMS by 7:25 each morning. Students must be seated in first period, ready to learn when school starts at 7:35!
LMS Fall Athletics
Leman has a wide array of athletic offerings, and we want your students to join! Fall sports registration is now open - click here. See the Leman athletic website for information. All athletes must have a current physical (from the last 13 months) on file at LMS. Julie Odom, the Assistant Director of Athletics and Activities, will be available for questions and sports registration help during Walk The Schedule outside the cafe.
7th and 8th Grade Girls Volleyball - on Wed, Aug 28th from 3:15-4:30, 7th and 8th-grade girls can meet the coaches and prepare for the season in the MOD gym. Tryouts are Tuesday, Sept 3rd. Use the Hazel Street Entrance.
Flag Football - on Wed, Aug 28th, from 3:15-4:30 on the Leman Forest Street field, all students, all grades, can meet the football coaches and get ready for the season. The season begins on Tuesday, Sept 3rd.
Information about Cross Country and Boy's Soccer is coming next week!

In the fall, we will give your student back his/her locks so that they can be used again. We hope this helps eliminate the need to search for their locks at the end of the summer.
PE uniforms will be brought home this week. It is a good idea to wash them as soon as they come home. :) The PE uniform needs to be kept and brought back in the fall. If your child needs a replacement uniform in the fall, your family will be charged a fee.

A reminder about look-alike or toy weapons
Please remind your children that toy weapons like water guns or Orbeez guns are strictly prohibited at school, on school grounds, or at school events. It is not uncommon for these items to pop up at this time of year when the weather gets warmer. Per our handbook, bringing or using these items at school, on school grounds after school, or at school events is a major disciplinary infraction. Consequences can range from suspensions to expulsions.

6th and 7th Grade Celebration Day
We are so excited for our students to earn a celebration day in 6th and 7th grade! The celebration day will occur on June 10th during the school day and will include different fun events for our students. Students can earn the celebration day by following the Leman Values each day. Students have the potential to lose events from the celebration day if their behaviors do not follow the Leman Values. We are so proud of our students and can't wait to celebrate a great year together!

We are pleased to share that Leman Middle School has partnered with Serenity House Counseling Services to educate our students and support those who display early signs of drug addiction. Serenity House will be running student presentations for eighth graders only on May 13th and 14th during the school day. The presenters are addiction counselors and individuals who have recovered from addiction or those who have loved ones who are addicts. Their conversations are up-front and realistic about the dangers of drug addiction. We encourage all parents with students in grades 6-8 to preview this presentation on Wednesday, May 8th, at 5:00 PM (Spanish) and 6:00 PM (English) in the LMS Cafetorium. Parents may attend with their child if they choose to do so.

Dress Code Reminder
As the weather gets warmer, we want to review the dress code policy at LMS. We frequently see violations of expectations #2 (obscene language) and #5 (showing skin or undergarments) in our policy. Students in violation of our dress code will either be given an opportunity to call their parent/guardian for a new shirt or pants, or will be asked to put on their PE uniform before they are able to return to class. We understand that some of the latest fashion trends include crop tops/"see-through" materials, sagging pants that expose the underwear, and t-shirts with jokes/statements that include vulgar language. These are not allowed in the District 33 school environment. You can find the full D33 dress code in the Parent/Student Handbook.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR)
Leman students will take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR), our statewide annual test to measure academic progress, on March 13th and 14th. It is very important for your child to be at school on these days. These tests are required by the state and scores are used for high school placement and determining which of our students need more academic support. Students take a total of five tests - two about reading/writing, and three about math. Please review this letter regarding the IAR test.
Here are a few reminders & helpful hints to help your student navigate testing:
Please make every effort to ensure your student is at school and on time for testing.
Make sure your students get good sleep prior to testing.
Talk to your student about the importance of the IAR test and that they need to do their best.
Students are not permitted to have cell phones or other personal electronics (tablets, smart watches, other devices that can access the internet) in their possession while testing. These items should be left at home or in the student's locker during testing. Students who bring these items to their testing room will have them collected by their teacher prior to starting the test.
Students will need headphones for the test. We encourage students to bring their own wired headphones for use during IAR testing. Bluetooth headphones are not permitted per state testing guidelines.

LMS Tardy Policy Updates
In our collaboration with the high school, they have asked us to stress coming to school every day and arriving to classes on time as two important high school readiness skills. Our new tardy system has been a major shift in our practice at LMS, and we are proud to share that in just two months since implementation, we have seen a 55% decrease in tardiness to school/class. This means that our Chargers are in the classroom, ready to learn as soon as our teachers begin instruction. Every minute counts! A decrease in tardiness keeps our hallways safer and minimizes classroom disruptions.
We appreciate your support in speaking with your students about any late-to-class instances that occur. If there is ever an occasion where your child is late to class due to circumstances outside their control, please call one of our deans to discuss. We are always happy to look into the situation and come to a resolution with you!
Our car riders should see a smoother arrival on Hazel Street in the morning as we made some minor personnel adjustments late in the week that gave us two very successful days of efficient drop off. Additionally, our buses have been running on time for a few months now - this is great news! Please note that due to staff arrival, it is not safe for students to be dropped off in our Joliet Street lot until after 7:30. Please do not pull into our Joliet Street entrance unless your child is arriving after 7:35. After 7:35, please use the circle drive, not the parking lot. As always, we recommend that bus riders take the bus to school and that walkers walk. This alleviates unnecessary traffic.
Valentine's Day
Wednesday is Valentine's Day! We love to see our students celebrating each other, but we also need to be mindful of the learning environment. Students will be asked to leave any gifts/candy in their lockers during the school day. Larger items (for example, stuffed animals, flowers, balloons, etc.) need to be left at home.
7th Grade Social
The 7th Grade Social is on Friday, February 23rd from 6-8 PM. Tickets will be sold during Advisory. They cost $3. Students must buy a ticket in advance, as no tickets are sold at the door. Parents, please note that students must be in attendance at school all day on the day of a social or they are not allowed to come to the dance. We look forward to a fun night with our 7th graders!
5Essentials Survey
Please take a few moments to fill out the 5Essentials parent survey by visiting https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/. Your responses will help us improve the culture and climate of our school. The window closes in March.

Trimester 2 Midterm Grades
Midterm grades will be viewable on Wednesday, 1/31. In the Home Access Center, click on Grades, then IPR. At Risk Letters will be sent in the coming weeks for students who are in danger of not meeting requirements to move into the next grade level. Additionally, 8th graders who are at risk of not graduating will be enrolled into our after school program, ASAP, in order to support their academic growth. More details will be sent to families in the next two weeks.
School ID Cards & The School Bus
Beginning on February 5th, 2024, all students who ride the morning bus will be required to show their school ID upon entering the bus. The bus route on the student ID must match the bus route the student is taking. Students who do not have an ID will not be turned away, however, their names will be recorded and the administration will follow up with those students to ensure they have an ID with them. This change is being made so that there is an accurate record of which students are on the bus & to ensure the safety of all students. Please talk to your student and remind them they will need their school ID. If your student does not have an ID card, they can get a duplicate from their advisory teacher. Students who have already received their free duplicate will need to get a new ID from the school office and their student account will be charged a $2 fee.

Trimester 2 Midterm Grades
Teachers will post midterm grades in the Home Access Center early next week. They will be viewable on Wednesday, 1/31. In the Home Access Center, click on Grades, then IPR. At Risk Letters will be sent in the coming weeks for students who are in danger of not meeting requirements to move into the next grade level. ACCESS Testing begins this week!
ACCESS testing measures English proficiency for students who are still considered English language learners. Students will be tested in reading, writing, listening, and speaking over the next month. If your child is taking the ACCESS test, please remind them of the importance of trying their best on the assessments! Passing the ACCESS test is a key component of high school readiness and a way to celebrate our students being on the path to biliteracy!
Arriving on time to school
In middle and high school, it is very important that students arrive on time and are ready to learn when class starts at 7:35. While in elementary school, students may start their day with a class meeting to start the day before beginning academics, this is not the same once students begin in the secondary setting. Middle school students begin coursework in an academic class promptly at 7:35, and those minutes of academic instruction cannot be made up elsewhere. This is why it is so important for students to arrive on time.
On days when the weather makes the roads particularly challenging, additional time is provided in the morning for our students to make their way to first period. Otherwise, if your child is going to arrive at LMS by car, please leave sufficient time for your child to make it through the car line. The Joliet Street entrance is only to be used by buses and LMS staff until after 7:35. We highly encourage our students who live in areas serviced by the school bus to arrive by bus. Our buses almost always arrive with plenty of time for students to make it to first period on time!

High School Open House and Upcoming Course Selection
This Wednesday, 1/10 at 7 PM, West Chicago Community High School will be holding an open house and activity fair for incoming students. All 8th grade families are encouraged to attend! Course selection is coming up in the next few weeks, and important information will be shared to help your child transition smoothly to high school. If you have any questions about the open house, course selection, or the transition in general, please reach out to the high school directly at 630-876-6200.
Hazel Street AM Drop-Off
In order to ensure a safe and smooth drop-off process in the morning, please remember the following procedures:
When entering the drop-off zone, please pull up all the way to the front & follow staff directions.
Please do not have students leave your car until your vehicle is in the drop-off zone & a Leman staff member has indicated it is safe to exit.
We appreciate your partnership!
8th Grade Graduation Pictures
Graduation photos will be taken on Friday, January 12th, for 8th grade students during their Health/PE class. No order forms are needed prior to pictures - you will be emailed photos to review and purchase using the HR Imaging website. Students will wear a graduation gown in the photo.
LMS does not participate in Spring photos for 6th or 7th grade students.
What does a Remote Learning Day look like for my LMS student?
All students were given a packet and a letter on the Friday before Winter Break. In the event that a remote learning day needs to be called, students are expected to complete the practice outlined on the 6th-8th Grade Letter and in the packet. The packet has not been linked in this message because there are multiple versions. If your child is missing a packet on a remote learning day, you can contact the grade level assistant principal for help.
All parents will receive a message from LMS via Parent Square to certify that your child has completed the assigned work. If you do not respond to the message, your child will be marked absent for the day and will not receive credit for the work. If you do not have access to Parent Square, you can send back a signed copy of the letter.
ATHLETICS: Winter Season 2 Coming Soon!
All athletics require a current sports physical on file with the nurse's office. Preparticipation Physical Exams are good for one year. Dear Leman Families,
The end of the calendar year is a reflective time for many, including me and the rest of my admin team! As we wrap up 2023, we want to pause and express how truly grateful we are for your partnership this year. This school year, we are feeling and seeing a positive shift in the climate and culture of our building. This is possible because of the tireless work of our faculty, staff, and families, who are holding our students to high expectations every single day.
We look forward to seeing your students back at school on Monday, January 8th!
Sincerely,
Maggie Lay
Principal

In case of an emergency remote learning day...
In the event that District 33 would need to close school buildings due to inclement weather or some other circumstance, the district may use remote learning days in lieu of a traditional snow day. You can review the full plan at the following site: https://www.wego33.org/domain/478. Please note that this year, there have been changes to the structure of remote learning day procedures. Previously, students would have Zoom meetings throughout the entire day for each of their classes. This year, in the event of anticipated inclement weather, packets of learning activities will be sent home for students to complete.

Winter is here!
During the winter months, students leave their coats in their lockers. We recommend that children dress in layers at school to ensure their comfort across all classroom settings. Students are not able to carry blankets or stuffed animals during the school day.
Staying Hydrated in the Winter
Students are welcome and encouraged to drink water during the day at school. The winter months can be very dry! However, coffee, Gatorade, and other beverages should not be brought to school due to the mess that they leave behind when spilled. Thank you for only sending your child to school with water!
Coming Soon - Scholastic Bowl!
Leman is starting a Scholastic Bowl team! Does your student like trivia? Enjoy competing and showing off your wealth of knowledge? Then the Scholastic Bowl is for them! The team will meet on Tuesdays starting December 12 if you want to see what it is like. Beginning in January, we would solidify a team and start competitions. The season would go through April, but don't worry; we can work out a schedule if students are in other clubs or activities. If they are interested, talk to Mrs. Rivera (riverasb@wego33.org) or join the Google Classroom listed on the flyers around the building.
Repeated information: Picture Retake Day
Picture retake day is on November 15th. Students who were absent on picture day or would like a retake will be able to take their picture this day. If you purchased a picture package and would like a retake, you must return the original picture package on retake day. You can purchase pictures online at shop.hrimaging.com.
Repeated information: Parent Teacher Conferences
A letter was sent regarding Parent Teacher Conferences (link). Please make sure you review it for detailed information about our format at LMS, as it is very different than the model used by elementary schools. Leman Middle School uses a Student-Led Conference model. Thursday evening’s conferences are individually scheduled for specific students who are at risk academically or behaviorally. Your child’s teacher will contact you directly if this applies to your child. All other students and their families are invited to attend conferences on Monday, November 20th and will be scheduled based on student last name (see below). There is no school on Friday, 11/17, nor on Monday, 11/20.

Student Pictures & IDs
If you ordered a picture package, you can expect them to be sent home with your student by Wednesday of this week! You can still order pictures through HR Imaging's website at shop.hrimaging.com. If you would like your student's picture to be retaken or if your student was not present at school on picture day, we will be offering a picture re-take day on November 15th.
Finally, students will be receiving their student ID cards this week in advisory. Students at Leman use their ID cards for multiple purposes, including breakfast carts, lunch, library book check-out, and identifying the bus they are to ride. Student IDs also help promote a safe and secure school environment. Please talk to your student about the importance of their school ID and help them find a location where they can keep their ID so that it does not get lost.
Hot topic: Halloween Costumes
We heard from a handful of parents last week who had hoped that their children could wear Halloween costumes on the 31st. We explained to the children leading up to the holiday that because of the many dress code violations that we have been managing at school (both males and females), Halloween costumes would not be allowed for our students this year. If students can show that they are able to responsibly follow the District 33 dress expectations (listed below), we will consider bringing them back again for next year.
One of the most challenging parts of running a building the size as large as Leman is being able to balance the perspectives of all of our families. We don't always make popular decisions, but we do our best to make decisions that are of the most benefit to our students. We would like to offer that there are many times in life in which different rules exist for adults than they do for children. The ages of 11-15 are a time when, simply due to brain development, our students naturally seek the rush of taking risks. This is why we often see our middle schoolers "giving attitude" at home, or trying out new words/language that we don't except, or why we see escalated, even physical, conflicts with peers. Our students' brains are on a roller coaster ride. At Leman, we work very hard to create a space in which it is easier to make a good choice and to find the appropriate places/times to take healthy risks. While the adults in their lives can more easily make a good choice about what is or is not appropriate to wear at school, sometimes our students do not. We hope that next year, our students will be ready to make good choices about wearing a costume for school!

Halloween at LMS
Tuesday is Halloween! This is reminder that at LMS, students are not able to wear costumes during the school day. We hope that our students have fun trick-or-treating during the evening hours!
Joliet Street Lot: DO NOT ENTER from 7:00-7:35
Unless you are parking and entering the building, please do not enter the Joliet Street parking lot in the morning before school. We have seen an increase in families pulling in with the buses to drop off students. This is not permitted. All students who arrive via car must be dropped off on Hazel Street. If your child is dropped off in the Joliet Street lot, we will require him/her to walk up to Hazel Street to enter. Thank you for following our morning procedures.
Attendance
Your student's attendance is important. Please make sure to report all absences to the Leman attendance line at (630)-293-6060 ext. 5205. This ensures that your student's attendance will be accurately reflected in our system. Thank you for your help!
Winter Sports Season I

New Tardy Management System
LMS will begin using the Perfect Pass tardy management system in the next two weeks. This is an automated system that tracks the number of times that students are late to class and assigns consequences based on that number.
When your child is late to class, you will receive a text message that alerts you of their tardy, as well as the date/time of any assigned detention. Important learning happens in the first five minutes of class! If your child is having trouble finding a quick path to class, he/she should talk to a teacher, counselor, or dean for extra help.
Mornings on Hazel Street
As the morning is getting darker and the weather is getting colder, it is important to remember that student and staff safety is crucial for making the morning drop off run smoothly.
When entering Hazel street off of Joliet, please form two lanes.
Please do not change lanes on Hazel Street as this causes additional backup and can be a safety concern.
Please pull all the way up as far as possible so that we can unload as many students as possible as quickly and safely as possible.
Once your car gets to the traffic supervisors, your child must quickly exit the vehicle and go to their assigned doors.
Additionally, please remind your child to look both ways before crossing the street.

We hope you will join us on Tuesday night. Doors open at 5:30 PM and presentations will begin at 6:00 PM.
Morning Drop Off
Thank you for following our morning drop off procedures. Please do not pull into any of our parking lots during arrival, as you may not drop off students in parking lots. When dropping off your students on Hazel Street, form two lanes and follow the direction of the traffic monitors. Pull all the way forward, as this helps traffic move smoothly in the morning. As always, we recommend that walkers walk to school and that our bus riders take the bus. This alleviates unnecessary car traffic.
Afternoon Pick Up
If you must pick up your student after school, please park on the left or right side of Hazel and keep the middle lane clear for traffic to flow. You should not be stopping or blocking the middle lane after school. Thank you!
Late Arrivals to School
First period begins at 7:35 am and students need to be seated in their classroom, ready to learn at that time. Any students arriving to school after 7:35 am will be directed to door 1 to receive a tardy slip. Students who arrive late on a regular basis will be assigned consequences.

SCHOOL STARTS AT 7:35 AM! Welcome back!
We recommend that any walkers or car riders arrive from 7:15-7:25 so that your child has time to get settled before class begins. A whole range of emotions is totally normal as children head back to school, especially for our sixth graders. See you bright and early on Thursday, 8/31!
First Day Reminders
Students will start their day in their ADVISORY classroom on Thursday. We will have lots of adults in the hallways helping our students find their way to classes. Students will receive a paper copy of their schedule in Advisory. 6th graders will be in Advisory all day. 7th and 8th graders will be in Advisory for periods 1-3, and then attend their normal classes for periods 4-10.
Buses Will Run Late
It is recommended that your child arrive at his/her bus stop 5-10 minutes prior to their pick-up time. Buses will run late, especially for the first two weeks of school. Please be patient as the drivers learn their new routes. Students whose buses arrive late to school are given a pass and are not marked tardy.
LMS Activity Bus
LMS runs a daily activity bus option that leaves LMS at 4:30. The bus is available to any student who is considered a bus rider. Each route runs similar to public transportation in that it makes only a few stops. If your child is going to take the activity bus, please review the stops listed below and help your child pick the stop that makes the most sense based on where you live:
