Media Studies

What is Media Studies?

At Wellington East Girls' College we currently have Media Studies at Year 10, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and Scholarship.

Students produce print journalism, music videos, short films and documentaries over the three years.  About half the year is practical, and half is theory.

It is a subject that suits students who are expressive, creative, opinionated and who cast a critical lens on the world around them.  Skills in essay writing and using technology are useful too, put can be picked up as you go.

Media studies addresses the need for media literacy in society.  Students learn to actively and critically analyse and deconstruct the media, from how they use social media themselves, to the way film scenes are crafted, to how the wider news media is not always unbiased.  Here is a video where film legend, Martin Scorsese, articulates the need for 'visual literacy' in the modern world.
