Dear Parents,
Our year will be full of excitement learning about the wonderment of our world and opening opportunities to grow into readers, writers and mathematicians. All year, we will be learning to be independent and competent readers who love to read. At every opportunity, we will share the joy of submerging oneself in a good book. Our emphasis in writing will be modeled after the Writing Workshop model which is proven effective, student-centered and highly engaging for students. Mini-lessons will be taught by the teacher regularly. The students will be asked to write every day. They will conference with their teachers regularly to learn specific writing skills according to their individual readiness and they will be invited to find areas in their own work to apply these writing skills that good writers use. In Math, we want our students to have a good sense about numbers and their values so that when presented with addition and subtraction, the students will automatically know the calculations without using their fingers or count objects. The students will connect to the real world through Science and Social Studies and understand how fascinating is our Earth.
Homework will be given Monday through Thursday with few exceptions. Homework will need to be returned the next school day. Students will be expected to complete their work neatly and thoughtfully.
Parents, please look in your child’s homework folder every day for announcements, important information or paperwork that you may need to know or fill out.
Every day, even on half days, have your child bring a healthy snack and drink to school.
Have your child wear appropriate shoes on gym days.
Label all outerwear, bookbags, etc. with your child’s name. Now that we have air conditioning, have your child bring a light sweater or jacket that your child can use in school to stay comfortable.
Thank you for your help. I look forward to this year with your child. If you ever need to contact me, the best way is through our email. Please allow 24 hours during weekdays to get back to you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Guzman
