History

Intent

At Weedon Bec Primary, our intent, when teaching history, is to stimulate the children’s curiosity in order for them to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the past and present. We believe that the study of history ignites children’s interest about the past in Britain and the wider world. Through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time, children understand how the past influences the present. History enables children to develop a context for their growing sense of identity and a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. What they learn through history can influence their decisions about personal choices, attitudes and values.

We offer a structure and sequence of lessons to help teachers ensure they have covered the skills required to meet the aims of the national curriculum. History across the school is divided into strands of learning, whereby each year group covers the same overarching strand at the same time to highlight progression and links. The teaching develops children’s historical skills and concepts which are transferable to whatever period of history is being studied and will equip children for future learning.
