CATHOLIC CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL was founded in 1985 / 1986 when the Windsor Catholic School Board voted to open a 4th Catholic High School in the city of Windsor. In January of 1986, a principal was chosen: Mr. Ed Johnston (Principal 1986 - 1988), who began to visit the feeder schools and work with students who would soon be the school's first class, and would eventually become the first graduates of the school.
The physical location of the school was the first major problem. It was decided that the first year classes would be held in the vacated St. Hubert's School in South Windsor (Now occupied by Monseigneur Jean Noel). The first classes began in September 1986 with a staff of 16 dedicated teachers. Students were bused out to South Windsor for their classes.
In August of 1987, negotiations with the Windsor Public School Board were completed and the school location moved from St. Hubert's. The new location had a long history in the area as a grade school (Guppy), a commercial high school (Commerce) and as the Adult Education Center. In the second year the staff grew to 36 and there were 470 students in grades 9 and 10. In our fifth year, we had 1074 students and 75 teachers.
In 1992, we began the $4.6 million addition and renovations. The grand opening of our beautiful new building was held on Nov. 19, 1993 under the leadership of Mr. R. Stephens (Principal 1989 - 1994)
In November of 2016, then Ontario Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter confirmed that the WECDSB would receive approximately $26M in funding to build a new school to replace Catholic Central High School. The Board’s original plan called for the school to be located in Windsor’s downtown core at the site of the former Windsor Arena, however after careful consideration, it was decided to purchase an 11-acre piece of property between Ouellette and McDougall Avenues, less than a kilometer south of the school’s present location on Tecumseh Road East.
In the beginning of the 2019/20 school year community consultation took place. On Jan. 28, 2020 the Board approved a recommendation to hire +VG Architects to design the new school.
Since the community consultation phase has completed, a space template was created to merge the Board's vision with the community voiced recommendations. The Facility Space Template (FST) has been submitted and approved by the Ministry of Education for the project outline. The new school is being designed for an enrollment of 900 students.
Work on the the project design has continued throughout the duration of the COVID 19 pandemic and is now moving towards a schematic framework, with a request for site plan approval recently submitted to the City of Windsor.
Administration from the Board is working with current school staff to develop the individual room data sheets to develop the project goals for the future school replacement.
The Board anticipates opening the new school for the 2022-23 school year.
