SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major)

ARTS & MEDIA

J. OWCHAR

The SHSM Visual Art & Media enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills during high school. This SHSM is designed to have a particular focus in Visual Art and Media through our traditional art and graphic design program here at St Joseph’s. Students receive specialized training in the fine arts-- drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture and the media arts-- film, photography, digital illustration and animation.

BUSINESS

C. GILBERT

The Business SHSM program offers students the ability to concentrate their studies in the field of Business while allowing them numerous reach-ahead opportunities with local community partners to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom to current business world problems. In addition, students receive multiple practical certifications, such as First Aid, CPR, and Customer Service, to add to their employability skills. Whether attending a TED talk, the Detroit Tigers Career Day, or a Leadership Conference at Canada's Wonderland, all activities within the Business SHSM program are aimed at complementing course material and increasing their ability to apply this knowledge outside of a traditional classroom.

ENVIRONMENT

M. NALKRANIAN 

The Environment SHSM program will give you the opportunity to enter your post-secondary pathway as a more purposeful, “eco-conscious” and environmentally active citizen, promoting sustainable practices, while being mindful and respectful of our Indigenous heritage. 

Employment in the environment sector has boomed in recent years and is expected to increase in sectors such as environmental protection, conservation and preservation of natural resources and environmental sustainability

HEALTH & WELLNESS

E. BYRNE

The Health and Wellness SHSM program enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace. In this SHSM program, students must complete their co-op credits in the healthcare field, must take four health and wellness credits and must complete seven sector recognized certifications.  They also engage in career exploration activities and a reach ahead experience. Students must fulfill the extra requirements of the program and have demonstrated an level of academic achievement. 

FRENCH IMMERSION - NON PROFIT

A. TOMASELLI

The SHSM French Immersion Non Profit enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills during high school. This SHSM is designed to have a particular focus in French Immersion and Non-Profit  through our French immersion program here at St Joseph’s. Students receive specialized training in the following sectors; community event planning and fundraising, ethical considerations, equity and inclusion, social media networking and project management.

CONSTRUCTION

R. COOP

The Construction SHSM program allows students to get a head start on a career in the Construction Industry. Students are involved in every facet of the industry through a series of community based projects that allows them to transfer the practical skills that they have learned in the program, applying them to real world projects. Every student in the Construction SHSM program has been involved in at least two Habitat for Humanity home builds over their 2 years in the program. These students have been part of a group that has helped to build 8 homes with habitat over the last 5 years. This, along with their Industry recognized certifications, gives the SHSM grad a real head start towards a rewarding career in Construction.
