Students in K-4 music classes will be graded based on four standards: Create, Perform, Respond, and Connect.
These standards are drawn from the Core Music Standards (PreK to Grade 8 General Music) created by the National Association for Music Education. More information about the Core Music Standards can be found here: http://www.nafme.org/my-classroom/standards/ .
They also correspond to the new Wisconsin Standards for Music (General Strand), more information here: dpi.wi.gov/fine-arts/music/education-standards
Each of the four standards (Create, Perform, Respond, and Connect) is addressed throughout the year in units based on a musical topic, listed here. Students are graded based on the following leveling system:
4- Exceeds the Standard
3- Meets the expectations for the Standard
2- Below Level of the Standard/Partial Mastery of Standard. Demonstrates partial understanding, or can perform portions of the standard with assistance.
1- Does Not Meet the Standard/ Little or No Mastery of the Standard. Cannot demonstrate mastery, even with instructor assistance.
On this page you will find links to some of the rubrics I use to measure student growth. Most of these rubrics are based on musical skills such as keeping a steady beat or matching pitch. All skill-based rubrics include a conversion to standards based grading. The standard based grading scores are what you will find on your child's report card.
