Lesson Title: Oral Argument: Bridge to Writing
Lesson Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to practice argumentative thesis writing and as a corollary to organization in essays. This assignment is used after claim, reasons and counterclaim have been defined and practiced using a variety of oral argument prompts, but used before students are referring to textual evidence for a paper. It is part of a larger unit where the students will apply what they learned to teach another class after they have written an argumentative paper.

Lesson Title: Franklin's "Speech in the Convention"
Lesson Purpose: This lesson comes from the “Writing Freedom” unit in ELA 11 which focuses on Foundational US Documents. The focus standards for this unit are attached to writing, but the final assessment will be an argument essay. Reading Franklin’s speech offers a way to introduce the author's purpose and also help students practice citing evidence.
