The team researched interest in virtual reality role play at Weber State using a survey of faculty in the Moyes College of Education and the Department of Communication in June and July 2020 (N=34). This was followed by Zoom-based focus groups of faculty from across the university in late July and August 2020 (N=26). Team members also piloted scenarios in 4 classes in November 2020 and received feedback from students.
As shown in the chart, a vast majority of the responses (94/102`) across all three items fall in the neutral (3) to strong positive (1) ratings. Furthermore the median value is at the positive (2) rating for the simulation for all items in both departments. Therefore, looking at the responses as a whole it appears there is agreement that the simulation is not perceived in a negative way except for 5 outlier responses.
Focus groups included faculty and staff from the Dumke College of Health Professions, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Goddard School of Business, College of Engineering and Applied Science and Technology, College of Science, Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of International Scholars.
Themes ranged from excitement for the software to skepticism that it could be useful. These themes are further detailed on the Focus Group page.
Avatar-driven role playing was used in four classes in November 2020: COMM 3060 Listening and Interviewing for xxxxxx; COMM 3890 The Signpost to teach journalistic interviewing; and EDUC xxxx for xxx.
