Task Description
In our P6 Language Arts course we read “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, where the main character is a bad tempered miser who cares for nothing but money.
This task is an extension to the part of the book we studied, where Scrooge chooses his career over marrying his fiancée (money over love) and is related to our core value of “Care”.
We asked students in P6 to look at a list of different ways you we can be wealthy (E.g. happiness, love etc.) before writing about the four that they consider to be the most important, and why.
Student's work
6E (10) Amos Ho
I think Health, Freedom, Love and Time are the four other forms of wealth more important than money.
Firstly, if you are healthy you feel happy. Many people mistakenly think that they had over a million dollars. They believe that would solve all of their problems. Actually, health is the foundation you need to attain every other valuable resource.
Next, “Freedom” is a condition in which people have the opportunity to speak, act and pursue happiness without unnecessary external restrictions. It is a fundamental human right as it allows citizens to speak freely and without interference.
As for “Love”, scientific studies have shown that being in love causes our body to release feel-good hormones and neuro-chemicals that trigger specific positive reactions. It can connect people and keep them close, regardless of long distances. No one can live a happy life without love.
Lastly, “Time” is the most precious resource because you can’t get it back, or you can’t get wasted time back. Everything is bound to time. For example, humans, plants and animals all have limited life and all eventually decay as time progresses. Since no one knows how much time they have, everyone should do the right thing at the right time.
Student's Reflection
In this class, I have learned to think about our topics from different points of view. I have also learned how to use the internet to do research for our reflections.
I am proud of the fact that I learned about different kinds of wealth other than, and more important than, money. I mean, I never really thought about it before. I am proud that I could write down my thoughts about four things that are forms of wealth but that are not money-related.
I used various resources to write this. I researched the internet to know more about these concepts, and I consulted with my parents. They had a lot of experience that they could share with me.
I learned more about our core values in doing this assignment too. People will have more respect for life and each other using these values, which can make peace on earth.
However, I think if I did this task again I would change “Freedom” to “Happiness”. People need to be happy and joyful to face everything in life.
Teacher's Comment
Amos chose four “other forms of wealth” that are greater than money with great understanding of the core value of “Care” in mind. He chose Health, Freedom, Love and Time and gave wonderful reasons for choosing them. His language was rather technical, showing that he researched the subject well. This is a very mature and well-written essay.
