Task Description
In Language Arts class Sunny is reading the classic book, ‘A Christmas Carol’. It is about how a miser changed his way from being selfish to selfless, through visiting his past, present and future Christmases. Scrooge is a wealthy but miserly person, whereas his employee, Bob Cratchit, is quite poor, but surrounded with joy and love from his family.
In this class, we discussed what wealth is and the different kinds of wealth there are in this world, then asked students to choose from a list, four kinds of wealth they think are important and write what they are and why they are important.
This task helps students to connect what we have discussed to their own lives.
Student's work
6D (18) Sunny Li
If I could be wealthy in only four ways, I would choose to be rich in health, purpose, love and money. Let me explain it to you.
First, I would choose Health. You can’t do anything without a healthy body, no matter how rich or smart you are. I also want to live a long life.
Then I would choose Purpose. If you don’t have any purpose, what is the point of being alive? I hope to become an actor, so my purpose will be to entertain others.
Thirdly, I would choose Love. This includes love from family and friends (there is a better word called ‘friendship’ though) and maybe people you don’t know. Everyone needs support from others to have the energy to keep going.
Lastly, I would choose money. Although money is not omnipotent, it is impossible to do anything without it. Imagine what would happen if you had no money-you would have nothing to eat or wear and nowhere to live. Everyone wants to have a good life.
So if you could be wealthy in only four things, what would you choose and why? Would you have the same answer as me?
Student's Reflection
In this lesson I learned that money is not the only kind of wealth. You can be wealthy in a lot of things: in health, love and purpose. I am very proud that my teacher chose this as a piece of good work as I did the research for this work on my own, without any help from others.
I think I learned to be more caring and always respect others, and that care, respect and, of course, love, can bring you a lot of happiness.
Teacher's Comment
Sunny wrote intelligently on other forms of wealth and, although he did say it was important to have money, he also said that health, purpose and love were essential to a better life. I like the way that the story ends with the writer questioning the reader whether they agree with him or not, and what they would choose? The essential message of this Language Arts class is to show that money isn’t the most important thing in life, and Sunny’s work showed a good balance of practicality and compassion.
