Task Description
During online learning, the class read an article about advertisements. After learning about some “tricks of the trade,” watching plenty of local, well-known and impactful examples to contextualize our learning, and discussing what makes a good commercial, students were tasked with planning and producing their own commercials in groups. They were instructed to consider the following areas when planning - product or message, target audience, slogan or catchphrase, background music, and special effects. As this learning task was assigned during online learning, students were given the freedom to choose the format that was most accessible to them.
6C (13) Avery Leung
6C (18) Sophie Ng
6C (23) Jolie So
Student's Reflection
When we could not go to school and had to learn online because of the virus, one of the worst things was that we couldn’t do was meet our friends. So, after we read an article about advertisements, and how they use different tricks to sell products to kids, our teacher told us to design our own ad and we immediately thought about Animal Crossing. A lot of us play Animal Crossing on the Nintendo Switch, and it is quite special because we can kind of “meet” each other and do different activities together there.
This task was fun because we had to use many different skills; not just English, but working as a team with friends and acting! We are proud of how our commercial shows our strong friendship and the meaning we want to say in the commercial – “Strong friendship bonds won't be broken by distances.”
We are P.6 students and it is nearly time for us to graduate. This commercial is a gift that represents our strong friendship. We hope everyone will treasure their friendships as much as we treasure ours! We hope everyone finds ways to keep their friendships strong even when they cannot meet. For us, Animal Crossing will always be one of the ways we connect with one another!
Teacher's Comment
Avery, Jolie and Sophie’s Switch advertisement was one of the most touching videos produced in the class for this task, and it is particularly impressive as the entire process took place during online learning, including teaching of the main reading text in the module, planning for the task and recording, editing and showcasing their work.
The girls’ work reflects a good understanding of the power of advertisements to influence people through emotional storytelling. They chose a product, Animal Crossing, that most students are familiar with; they identified the unique aspects of the product that make it so popular; they created a storyline that showcases how the product brings meaning and value to their, and others’ lives.
