Task Description
In the English lesson, students read ‘Grandpa Chatterji’, a story about two different Indian grandpas. Students have learnt to respect different cultures, and they have also learned how to describe a person in different ways -like their appearance, personality, their way of speaking and habits etc. So in this writing task, students need to creatively write about a new alien friend with respect to the above aspects, and they also had to write a surprise that their alien friend showed them, as a climax to their story.

The Cat from the Faraway Planet
Some people think there are no such things as legendary creatures. Here’s my advice to them: Get some glasses, you’re short-sighted! Last Saturday, at one o’ clock, I had traced the picture of the mythical three-tailed cat just out of boredom. I couldn’t believe my eyes when the exact same creature appeared with a flash next to me. The cat, like the picture, had a coat of sleek, black, glistening fur that seemed to dim the lights in the room. Its yellow almond-shaped eyes were narrowed, as if it disapproved of everything it saw. Although the cat itself was small, it was giving off an aura of power. However, the frown upon its face told me it needed a careful approach.
The cat spoke first. “I’m sorry for my sudden appearance. Some guy doodled on the sacred portal of my noble ancestors and I was forced to come here. But now I’m beginning to regret it.” It gave me a searching look. “I’m LinMao. What’s your name?” “I’m Bella. Can I ask…are you an alien?” I said shakily in a puzzled voice.
“Ha! Another act of Human ignorance,” LinMao snorted.
“You classify us as‘Aliens’. The meaning of ‘Alien’ shouldn’t be defined so easily.”
I went on eagerly, “So what do you do on Mars?”
“Humans expect as to bow down to them? No, we are not pets. We get on with our daily business, just as you humans do,” LinMao interrupted, sarcastically.
”Well, with a kitty style twist,” she added.
“I understand, but I’m hungry,” I added as my tummy rumbled. “I’ll take you to the café downstairs.”
As we walked on the sidewalk, LinMao caught a glimpse of a stray cat wandering near a trash can.
“What in the name of Merlin is that?!” LinMao cried in horror, disgusted.
“A stray-I mean, some of your kind,” I said in reply.
“Our kind will never do something as shameful as-Ooh, what’s that?” LinMao sniffed the aroma in the air expectantly. I laughed and slipped into the café booth, with LinMao trotting by my side.
“Two Strawberry Sodas, please?” I said politely to the waiter. LinMao took a tiny lick of the drink which appeared on our table out of nowhere. One second later, it was wolfing down the Soda as if it was the most precious thing in the world.
“What is this fantastic drink called?” LinMao asked, its eyes twinkling.
I beamed at it and replied, “You can say it is one of our ‘Human Intelligences!’”
The sun was already touching the mountain tops when we went home. LinMao turned to me and said,” I enjoyed staying on your planet, but it is time for me to go.”
I struggled to find the right words for this moment.
“I am so glad that you came, LinMao!”
With a flash, it was gone. I learned that there were a lot of unknown creatures in the universe, and they deserve respect as much as humans do. As I marveled over today’s wonderful adventure, I could imagine LinMao playing in the story sky, nodding in approval at my words.
Student's Reflection
I really enjoyed writing about this topic because it let us be creative, and I could let my imagination flow from pencil to paper! At first, I wanted to write a story that showed how different an alien's view is compared to ours, and suddenly I settled on this three-tailed cat called LinMao. I wanted to make ordinary things stand out, like how a strawberry soda would taste delicious to an alien. I would like to improve my tenses next time, and I'm looking forward to writing a sequel!
Teacher's Comment
With an intriguing beginning, Bella’s story successfully drew my attention. The whole story was full of humour and creativity. Bella described her new alien friend in great detail and phrased her words in the loveliest ways. In her writing, Bella naturally and accurately used the vocabulary that she learnt from the textbook. She also concluded her story with a good message – to respect others, despite differences.
