Task Description
The students read a story called ‘Grandpa Chatterji’. This is a story about two grandchildren who have never met their grandfather. One day, their mother told them that their grandfather was going to visit them from India.
Students learned some cultural differences from the stories and learned how to respect the culture of others. After reading, the students were asked to use their creativity to write a story, saying that they have an alien friend who is coming to visit from Mars. Students are required to write about the experience that they have with the alien friend during his stay.

The Upside Down
Last week, when I was walking home from school, I heard some weird noises coming from the bushes. I was curious, so I went to check what was making all the commotion. I walked behind the bush but saw nothing. Then, I felt something slimy on my shoes. I followed the marks and found a huge hole in a tree! I reached into the other side of the tree, it felt cold and slimy. I was really curious, so I went into the hole. It was dark and scary, but it looked exactly like earth. Then I heard the noise again. This time, it sounded really close! Suddenly, a really tall creature with a star-shaped face appeared right in front of my face! I was really astonished and tried to escape, but the hole was closed! The creature said that once you entered the dimension, you could never go back. I was startled and started to panic. How was I supposed to go home? Mom must be worried sick about me. I decided to be brave and talked to the creature, so maybe I could find a way out.
Firstly, I had to know more about this place and what the creature was, so I asked him questions. I asked what the creature was. He said he was a Demogorgon, and that he came from Mars. I thought the name Demogorgon was too long, so I decided to call him Dart. I asked Dart what this place was and why there was a hole to this dimension, and it suddenly appeared in the tree in my backyard? He said that this place was called the Upside Down and he said that some scientists made a mistake in an experiment and accidentally opened a gate to the Upside Down. The mysterious gates were spreading all over the city!
I thought and thought but couldn’t find a way to close this gate. I asked him if he knew what caused this mistake, but he didn’t know. However, he told me one thing that the Upside Down was controlled by a creature and, the creature was called the Mind Flayer. The Mind Flayer was scared of fire which meant the Upside Down was too! So, if we found it, and burned it, we could close Upside Down.
After a while, we started digging a hole to try to escape from Upside Down. All of a sudden, my nose started to bleed! I thought it was just really dry but then I made Dart fly! I was really confused and asked him why this was happening. He said that once you entered this dimension, everyone would be given some special powers! This was perfect! If I could make everything in Upside Down move with my mind, I could easily dig a hole to get back out. At that moment, I instantly remembered that everything from the Upside Down was scared of fire, so I told Dart to gather a big pile of wood, and we started burning Upside Down. After burning it for a while, the hole was finally big enough for us to escape!
We felt so relieved when we escaped. Dart was really surprised how earth looked and wanted to explore, so I decided to bring him to the pond near my house, but first I had to find him a costume, because I think humans would be terrified seeing a creature like Dart in public. I quickly ran to the costume store and I found a lot of cool, funny costumes but the only one that fit Dart was a dinosaur costume. I thought it would look good on Dart, so I bought it! I rushed back home and told Dart to put it on. He thought it was really cool and loved it. We went to the pond near our house. Dart was scared of butterflies just like me! A lot of people were staring at us because it wasn’t every day you saw a Demogorgon in a dinosaur suit running away from the butterflies, because he was afraid of them.
After a while, we went back home to have dinner, because we had a long day and we both felt bone-tired. Once we stepped in my house, my parents were glaring at us and were so confused because there was a 2-metres tall dinosaur in the house, and because I had been gone all day. I explained everything to them, but of course they didn’t believe me and thought I had lost my mind. My parents decided to have dinner in the living room and left us alone. After dinner, Dart had to go back to Mars. We said goodbye to each other, and he promised he would visit again if he could!
This was definitely a crazy and unforgettable experience. Oh no! Wait! Dart hasn’t taken off his suit yet!
Student's Reflection
I think I learned perseverance when I was doing this piece of writing because when I was halfway through, I thought it was terrible and wanted to rewrite it. But since there wasn’t enough time, I only made a few changes and it turned out way better.
Teacher's Comment
I appreciate your unlimited writing creativity. In the story, you described your alien friend as a real friend. You also illustrated every detail thoughtfully in the story -from when you were trapped in the cave, until you figured out the strategy to escape from it with your alien friend. This really brought your readers into your story. Bravo, Kalysta!
