Task Description
In this unit, Cayden and the class finished reading an excerpt of Grandpa Chatterji - a story about two vastly different grandpas. The class was guided to ponder on the cultural differences that people from around the world may share.
In this writing task, Cayden and his classmates created an alien friend and described in detail about their appearance, personality, way of speaking, and even eating habits. As the climax of their stories, the class had to write a surprise that the alien had shown them.

My Alien Friend
Last week, an alien from Mars came all the way here to Earth to pay my family a visit. He had travelled to many different places in the galaxy. He came to my home to learn more about our culture on Earth.
On the day of his arrival, I heard a strange noise from our front door. When I opened the door, I saw a guy who was much taller than me. He had two horns that were shaped like bananas, a pair of sleepy eyes, a heart-shaped nose and a smiley face. On his back there was a pair of shiny wings and a cloak with a bright star on it. That was it! He was not wearing anything else! Underneath the cloak there were eight arms, which reminded me of an octopus.
When I saw him outside of my house, my immediate action was to close the door on this special, yet strange-looking guy.
“Hi little one, I know you are from this green and blue planet!” he yelled from outside the door.
Feeling sceptical, I slowly opened the door and asked, “Who are you? I don’t think you’re human!”
“Indeed, I am no human, but I am from a planet near this green and blue planet of yours. I am from Mars, little one.”
“What is your name?” I asked.
“My name is Pat, little one,” he replied.
We chatted for a while, then I learnt that he was travelling all over the galaxy. Next, he asked me, “Can we have lunch together, little one?” Then he ran to my kitchen at once. He yelled, “Oh my goodness! You have washing-up liquid, noodles and curry! Let me cook for you. You are the first friend I made here after all.”
“Does curry go well with washing-up liquid and noodles? It seems so strange!” I said.
“Not strange at all!” He replied. “It is very delicious! It’s very common on Mars.”
He then told me washing-up liquid is the main dish on Mars, and that the Martians liked to have it with their curry. He seemed so excited about our different eating habits. Even though I found it a bit strange, I was still eager to try his cooking. We should always respect each other, even when we are not used to their habits.
I also found out that he had a smartphone. He could contact his friends and play games with them. He liked to watch TV programs with me, and he was good at singing too. It really surprised me that some habits we had were so similar. We were different, yet the same.
When it was almost midnight, my mom and dad finally came back. They were shocked to learn that there was an alien in our house. My dad glared at me and asked, “Why did you bring an alien into our home?”
“This is Pat,” I replied. “He came here from Mars, and he is travelling around the galaxy.” My parents were very understanding, and they let Pat stay.
The next day, when I was getting ready for school, I saw that Pat was already up. I tried to talk to him, but he ignored me. I wanted to tell him some jokes, but he still ignored me. “Oh, he is still sleeping!” I said to myself, when I noticed that his nose was still black in colour (and not red). So, I assumed he was still sleeping. I then hurried to school.
When I came home from school, I saw that Pat had already stuffed all his belongings into his large backpack. I asked him, “Why are you packing?”
He replied sadly, “Sorry, I have to travel to another place, but I have a surprise for you!”
I was stunned when he took a present out of his backpack and said, “This is for you, little one.”
I opened my present, and inside I found a flower which was red and black in colour.
I asked, “What is this, Pat?”
“This is what we called a Fire Flower. It’s very common on Mars.”
Finally, it was time to say goodbye to Pat. I cried and said, “Goodbye.”
He comforted me and said, “We shall meet again in the future.”
He then flew away from Earth. I hope he can travel to many different places in our galaxy!
Student's Reflection
I felt happy after completing this task. I felt satisfied because the content was fun and interesting. I also learnt that we should treat our friends well and enjoy the time we spend together.
Teacher's Comment
When I was reading about Cayden’s alien friend, his description really helped me to visualise the creature. He put together a vivid portrayal of the character that had only existed in his mind. I am particularly impressed by the way Cayden incorporated his belief of respecting the differences one may share with another being, in this creative story. Well done, Cayden!
