Task Description
In our classic Language Arts book, “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis, the triumph of good over evil is central to the plot. We asked students to reflect on one of the main character’s choice of betraying his siblings for personal gain. Students had to write a dialogue between Edmund and an angel, advising him not to trust the temptations of the evil white witch.
Student's work
4E (25) Cassidy Wong
Edmund: Who’s there?
Angel: I am an angel on your shoulder.
Edmund: Who are you? What are you doing? Get off of my shoulder!
Angel: Oh, Edmund, dear…
Edmund: Wait…How do you know my name? TELL ME!
Angel: Allow me to explain; I am an angel, so I know everything. Now then, why would you listen to the promises of the White Witch? Do you think she is trustworthy?
Edmund: Not really, but I really want Turkish Delight. Besides, I can be Prince, or maybe even King, of Narnia. I won’t need to do housework anymore.
Angel: This is temptation. Do you even think that the witch would even keep her promises?
Edmund: Uh…
Angel: No. So if you want Turkish Delight so much, I’ll make some for you. But please resist the temptation and say no.
Student's Reflection
In this class, I learned how to make correct decisions. Temptation can deceive your mind into making the wrong ones, and now I know how to resist it better. I am proud that I can express feelings well. I also think that the advice I made is logical.
I did all the research for this task on my own -okay, maybe a little help from the internet. I watched a video and tried to express the feelings of the characters. I learned the core value of Perseverance and how to persevere to take the right direction through temptation.
If I had to change something in this piece, I would add some more feeling words to express the feelings more genuinely.
Teacher's Comment
This reflection was on the lesson where Edmund, who is a middle child, succumbs easily to the promises of the White Witch. He feels undervalued in his own family and is blinded by her flattery. Cassidy offers some good advice here in her dialogue, from the perspective of the angel on Edmund’s shoulder. Her angel highlights the core value of Care.
