Task Description
Students were to write a story about a conflict between a son and his parents. This task requires students to describe the given pictures and create an intriguing ending. During preparation, students got to discuss and explore how the character reacted to the problem and how it could be solved. Students were invited to think in someone else’s shoes and to express themselves vocally.
The curriculum provides students with texts of different genres. The themes range from traditions to the power of nature and more. Although various genres and themes were taught, they all serve the same purpose: to reflect upon oneself and to make connections to others. This is also the main theme of the current school year - Connectedness.

Grandpa and Derek
Derek’s grandpa lives in an elderly home. Every Sunday, Derek and his family pay a visit there. Derek’s parents tend to his grandpa when they visit him. They always feed grandpa patiently. Derek is often bored because he has nothing to do. He thinks it is wasting his time.
One Sunday, Derek told his parents that he didn’t want to visit his grandpa. He wanted to ride a bicycle with his friends. His parents were disappointed and a bit stunned.
They asked, “Why?”
Derek replied, “Because I think visiting Grandpa is boring and wasting my time. I prefer to ride a bicycle.”
Derek’s mum took out a photo album and gave it to Derek. They looked at the photos together. The photos reminded him that his grandpa took care and played with him when he was little. Grandpa was his best companion back then.
Derek cried and regretted what he had done. He made a card for his grandpa. He wanted him to know how much he missed him. He then stuck some photos of him and his grandpa in the card. He hoped that the photos could help his grandpa to recall their happy moments.
When the next Sunday came, Derek gave the card to his grandpa and talked with him for a long time. He promised he would visit every Sunday. They had a wonderful day and laughed a lot.
Student's Reflection
I think I wrote well because I did it all by myself. I used to seek help from my mother when it got to planning for writing. I didn’t know I could do so much (I was able to write a complete story with good details and vocabulary.) The climax and resolution are my favourite parts because all characters were happy in the end. I learnt to trust in myself more.
Teacher's Comment
Eugene did a good job on writing a complete story with many relevant details. He was able to create an ending which showed his sympathy towards others. His writing flows smoothly in an organized way. The word choice was wise and appropriate. His work is engaging.
