Task Description
This writing task stems from the reading of a tall tale from the text book, ‘Reach Higher’. As students read the story, we highlighted the genre and characteristics of a tall tale and identified the connection between problem, event and solution in the story element of ‘Ozzie Bear’. From reading the passage, we bridged students to start writing their own version of a tall tale that included an exaggerated character with super powers. This character would help to solve their complications and challenges.

My Adventure on Earth-101
The sound of swirling wind chased me on my bike.
“How long have I been getting chased?” I thought to myself.
My heart was still thumping as I kept thinking about my family.
“ Are they safe? Are they still alive?”
At that moment, I was sucked into the tornado. Suddenly, something hit me on the head, and then I fell into a kind of darkness that was as black as charcoal.
When I woke up, I saw blue grass all around me. The terrain was rough. I stood up and looked around. I knew I was in another dimension. I named it ‘Earth-101’. I started to panic and walked around the place. I needed to find a way home, but when I started to run I felt a hint of power surging through me. I ran again, and I was zipped to a hill about 3 miles away from where I was standing a second before! Now I knew I had superpowers! I started to run all over the place, exploring as I went.
When I was exploring a meadow with white trees everywhere, I saw a humanoid figure running swiftly through the trees. I chased after it, and when I caught it, I learned that his name was Brian. He also got trapped on Earth-101, and his power was super-speed. After chatting for a few minutes, we decided to find the way back home together.
As we were running all over the place, we encountered many monsters. We were able to defeat a lot of them using our superpowers. But when we tried to fight a wall-climbing monster it shot ice from its mouth everywhere! What a deadly combination! We name it ‘Frost’, and decided to leave it alone. We kept on searching for our way home.
After a few minutes, we saw something shimmering ahead of us. As we got closer, a portal appeared within a circle of trees. Just as we were about to enter, Frost appeared in front of the portal! We fell back in shock. We were able to dodge the ice, but even though we were exceptionally fast, Frost was still able to freeze my arm! At first, pain ran through my veins. I let out an agonizing roar as my arm went numb. As I was running for the portal my vision started to blur. As I closed my eyes, all I heard was a thud as I hit the ground. I had fainted a few steps from the portal.
When I woke up, I sat bolt upright, looking around for Frost. But I wasn’t in the forest anymore. Brian told me he pulled me through the portal. I looked at my arm. The ice was thawing in a tub of hot water. After my arm thawed, I ran back home, with Brian following me. It was time to design our superhero suits!
Student's Reflection
I learned how to write a tall tale and create an interesting idea. Through this piece of writing I also learnt to persevere. It was not easy to write an interesting story, but I did not give up. I am proud of my work because I have improved from my previous writing, and I got recognized by my teacher! If I had to chance to do this piece over again I would try to have a wider range of vocabulary.
Teacher's Comment
Jordan did great in this piece of writing. Although the character had superpowers, he was not without flaws. And through the flaws, we see glimpses of friendship budding between the characters! The feature about his writing that grabbed my attention the most was his use of words. He was able to create a vivid image for readers through sensory descriptions. Well done, Jordan!
