Task Description
After meeting the four rude children in our classic novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, we asked students to reflect on the lesson by creating a new character with bad habits/ personalities.
For example, one of the core values that we are teaching in P3 is Responsibility, and we suggested that their new character could show a lack of responsibility in their actions.
Student's work
3E (29) Katrina Wong
His name is Kenny and he likes to tell lies. He is dishonest. One day Kenny’s friend asked, “Do you have any pencils?” Kenny replied that he didn’t have any pencils either. His friend wanted to check in Kenny’s drawer and asked Kenny if he could.
“Okay,” Kenny said. When his friend checked his drawer he found a pencil case.
“Huh, this is yours?” roared his friend
“Oh yes”, said Kenny.
“You told a lie!”
‘Ha, ha, ha”, Kenny laughed.
Now he is lonely because no one wants to make friends with him. Every time Kenny tells a lie the Oompa Loompas will know, because every time he tells a lie his nose grows longer and longer.
Student's Reflection
In this class I learned about not telling lies, and that if you do, you can be found out.
I liked the end of my story especially because it was interesting that his nose got longer and longer.
If I could do this piece again, I would add more dialogue and adjectives.
This lesson taught me about Integrity, Care and Respect, because we need to be honest and care for other people’s feelings. We should also be polite.
Teacher's Comment
Katrina gave her new character the trait of being dishonest and telling lies, she also used part of a different classical story character (Pinocchio) to show his punishment being his nose growing when he lies. I thought that Katrina’s drawing and writing complimented each other very well in this reflective journal, and that the character she created lacked responsibility for his actions.
