Task Description
Abbie studied the story, ‘Kitoto the Mighty’. It was about the problems that a mouse called Kitoto encountered while he was on a journey to look for a mighty friend. For this writing task, a new situation was given where Kitoto had to find medicines for his sick friend. Abbie had to think of her own solutions based on the given context and problems. Then she wrote the ideas down in her graphic organizer. As she had learnt about problem-solution in the story, this writing was done to check if she could think critically and suggest appropriate, yet interesting, solutions to solve those problems.

Kitoto’s Big Adventure
It began deep in the root of the mountain, somewhere in the Savannah. A little mouse called Kitoto was worried about something; his friend Kigego had become sick. Kitoto needed to find the medicine before sunset, or else she would die. He promised Kigego that he would find the medicine before sunset. He ventured out to find the medicine.
Near the river, Kitoto saw the same hawk again. He quickly darted into a bush to hide.
“I must think of a way to walk past the hawk. Hmm…. I know! I can ask the lion for help! The lion will definitely help me because it knows the story of ‘The Lion and the Mouse’. If the hawk attacks, the lion can fight back!” thought Kitoto.
So, he went to find the lion. Kitoto reminded the lion how he helped the lion by saving it from the hunter before. After some time, he returned with the lion. The lion distracted the hawk by giving it fresh meat to eat. At the same time, Kitoto succeeded in going past the hawk without being seen.
But when Kitoto was near to getting the medicine, he came across a cliff! Luckily, he saw a bridge. When he was about to cross the bridge, he found out that the bridge was broken! Suddenly, he saw Paddy, the giraffe talking to Kitoto’s brother, Kigego. Kitoto scurried quickly to where they were and asked Paddy if she could help him cross the bridge. “Of course!” replied Paddy. Since Paddy had the longest neck among the giraffes, she could help Kitoto by using her neck as the broken part of the bridge. After he crossed the bridge, he thanked Paddy for helping him. “Oh, by the way, you are looking for medicine, right? If you solve a riddle from the Riddle Witch, she will give you a reward,” said Paddy. “Okay, thanks!” shouted Kitoto as he continued his journey.
The medicine was deep in the woods. Kitoto saw a small hut. He believed that it was the house of the Riddle Witch. He knocked on the door. The Riddle Witch already knew what Kitoto wanted, because she was a witch. She told him to solve a riddle then she would give him the magical talking map to help him find the medicine. The riddle was “I am always there for you, following you like your best friend, copying everything you do. You see me on the ground. What am I?” she said to Kitoto. “The answer is your shadow,” replied Kitoto. “Right!” said the witch as she gave him the map.
It was almost sunset when Kitoto arrived home with the medicine, back on the mountain. Kitoto put the medicine into Kigego’s mouth.
It was sunset and Kitoto had saved Kigego’s life!
Student's Reflection
For this task, thinking of a solution was difficult because I needed to think of solutions that were not only interesting, but also were able to solve the problem and, at the same time, show connection throughout the whole story. When writing my story, I tried to create new characters and places to enrich it. I wanted to make readers feel like they were really in the story.
Teacher's Comment
Abbie has shown her understanding through her work. She is very creative, as she has added many new characters and created new situations that helped to bring out meaning in the story. To make her writing exciting for readers she added dialogues too! This piece of work is indeed a very outstanding one, where she could create a very exciting and organised story within a limited period of time.
