Task Description
Nathan is reading a book called ‘The Giving Tree’. The story is about a tree that continuously gives an abundant amount of love to a young boy. Throughout the story, we see the boy keeps asking things from the tree, but the boy is reluctant to give time to the tree in exchange, right up until the end of the story.
During the class, we finished reading the book and asked the students to imagine and discuss that, if they had a chance to play the main character of ‘the boy’ from the story, how would they behave with the tree?
As an extension task, the students had to make a comic strip or write a short story about how they would look after the tree, if they were the boy from the story.
Student's work
2D (21) Nathan Shun
If I ever get the chance to be the boy from this story, I will eat the apples and use the seeds to grow another tree, so that my friend (the tree) can have a friend just like him. When I grow up, I will tie a hammock between the two trees, then children can play on the hammock. When I am an old man and my children have gone to live their lives in the big city, then I can relax on the hammock. I will always try to spend more time with the tree. I will make sure if, after I die, my children will look after the tree like their friend. My children will regularly water the tree, and the tree will grow apples for my children to eat. My children can use the tree branches to make toys, crowns, and a swing -like I did when I was a child. Both the tree and my children will always be happy.
Student's Reflection
My work is about caring for my fantastic mom. I love my work, so I put a lot of time into doing this piece of work. In this task, I learned that we should care for each other. I think I would write about the rest of my family if I could do this task again because I love them too. I learned that we need to be thankful for the people that help us.
Teacher's Comment
Nathan showed a good understanding of the main character in the story. He pictured himself in the boy's position, and how he would be more responsible towards the tree -unlike the boy from the story. Nathan's work demonstrated the value that P.2 has been working on – Care.
He has also put in a lot of thought and effort in his work by presenting it with vibrant colors and tidy handwriting. Great job, Nathan!
