Task Description
During the science lesson the students were presented with a plastic box containing a number of grasshoppers. The aim of the activity was for the students to observe, identify, and draw the characteristics of a grasshopper. They would then use their findings to understand which of the key characteristics were specific to classifying them as insects.

Student's Reflection
In the experiment, I was paired up with my classmate and given a transparent plastic box with a grasshopper for a 30-minute observation. I was able to learn about the appearance and features of a grasshopper. It has long antennae and a pair of strong back legs, which helps it move quickly and jump very high. It was very exciting to see a grasshopper. It was tiny and cute. The grasshopper jumped to the top of the box. I nearly touched its long antennae.
Teacher's Comment
Margo demonstrated great observational skills when carrying out the activity. She examined the grasshoppers very closely and was able to identify the characteristics of the grasshoppers by recording her drawing in her science booklet. Margo was also able to state which of the key characteristics were vital to the grasshopper’s classification as an insect.
