Task Description
Over the course of several English lessons, students read a poem about what can be seen in the different seasons, and why the weather changes. Students were invited to pay special attention to the creative rhyming pairs and visually descriptive language in the poem. Then, students were invited to re-use the skills, words and ideas from the poem to craft a personal response – a poem about their own favourite season.
To guide students through the process of writing their own poems, students first brainstormed in pairs. They “hunted for treasure” in the textbook and selected rhyming pairs and words or phrases that they liked. Then they listed things they could see, hear, touch, smell and taste in their favourite season. After writing their poems, students visualised their ideas by adding drawings. Finally, students were invited to read their poems aloud for the class to enjoy and appreciate.

Student's Reflection
I like getting to write a poem and draw for English because it’s fun. Writing a poem is special because it has rhyming words and is more interesting. I also liked that we could choose which season we wanted to write about because everyone has different ideas, and it’s nice to hear about others’ different ideas. I like to work together with people, so I liked brainstorming rhymes and ideas with my classmates. Working together makes the job happier.
Teacher's Comment
After learning to identify rhymes and appreciate the visually descriptive language in a poem in class, Kacey was able to go on and craft a unique poem with ideas and rhymes of her own. Kacey’s poem reflects that she is able to confidently use language to express her ideas and independently apply classroom learning in new contexts. Her fun summer poem brought smiles to the faces of the students in our class!
