Dear Parents,
We learn math in Grade 4 by weekly covering each of the strands from the curriculum (see document to the right). By distributing or spiraling the entire year's curriculum, we are able to revisit concepts and build on previous knowledge in a way that hopefully will allow students to better retain what they've learned. For example, instead of teaching a fractions unit once in say, March, we will talk about fractions throughout the year. This method allows for multiple opportunities for assessment, for reteaching and for success. The goal is better long-term mastery of facts, skills, and concepts. By the end of Grade 4, we will have fully covered the expectations listed in the attached Ontario Curriculum guide. When looking at math marks on the first two report cards, keep in mind that the marks in the strands are a reflection of the work completed so far, but do not yet indicate mastery in those strands. The final report card in June, is a more accurate representation of each student's math mastery for Grade 4.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Ms. Gonyou
Allow them to practice their skills on Khan Academy to solidify their current learning (weekly)
Review their Weekly Spiral Mat (posted to Google Classroom) with them the night before our Friday weekly quiz - there will be NO surprises on the quizzes; what they learned that week is what will be assessed
