The club was started in about 2014 as a group of the University of the 3rd Age in Burgess Hill. It got its name as we originally met at the Weald Pub with Fred Bone as Chair and Bob Martin as Vice-chair. Fred used his network as a serial club member and leader to promote the idea and Bob made us welcome every month. The club became established in August 2015 and the numbers increased.
From the beginning the focus of the club was as a social group with an interest in older cars and bikes. It was important that people had enthusiasm and enjoyed meeting with others whilst not taking it all too seriously. This ethos has remained and has drawn many people into classic ownership learning about the different options and levels of commitment. Afterall, not many people are going to immediately launch into a full restoration of a historic vehicle, we all need to start somewhere.
During the Covid lockdown the club continued to meet online which held the core of the group together when few of us were allowed to socialise. Afterwards the group quickly pulled together and joined the first community event in Burgess Hill in 2021 before starting our own annual shows, Wheels Through the Years.
Every month there is the Club Night (2nd Tuesday) Club Breakfast (3rd Sunday) and Drive and Dine (4th Tuesday) which everyone is invited to join. We will also join regular local events such as the Brum Brum Brunch in Ticehurst and Classics, Coffee and Chrome in Plumpton.
Honorary President - Fred Bone. One of our original members Fred was Chair until 2023 and now supports the club officers as critical friend and a regular participant in our social activities. Fred is a serial Jaguar and MX5 owner.
Chair - Nick Willmore. A member since 2016 Nick was originally involved with organising events to show our vehicles until he took on the Chair in 2023. Nick's interests are pre-war cars and more recent motorbikes. He is restoring an old Volvo that has been going on for too long.
Vice Chair - Tony Panett. Tony has been in the club for many years along with his son Neil. Tony and Neil have an interest in MGBs and Triumphs of the 1970's.
Treasurer - Ian Renshaw. Bob brought Ian into the club after the original treasurer left and over time he has become more involved to the point where he has now bought himself a classic Jaguar.
Social Events - Tony Boyle. Tony has been in the club since it's early days and supports the monthly Drive n Dines taking members to different places every month. Tony is a keen caravanner and MG enthusiast, now showing his MG TF.
Show Coordinator - David Nightingale. David joined in 2022 when he moved to Burgess Hill and takes the lead on making the show happen every year, along with overseeing the Club Breakfasts each month. David is a keen MX5 owner (with Mandy) and has recently taken on a Vauxhall VX in need of some love and attention.
