Shoot 1
This shoot I was just exsploring my theme, I took photos during a hunting trip in Hokatika during the term.
I also did a shoot in Hamilton where I learned to use the camera. I just exsplored by taking photos of the still life objects I had avaliable to me. As well as the river which I live next to. My family weren't doing anything for the weekend so It was hard to photograph family.
Shoot 2
I found this shoot very challenging as I was still learning how to use the camera and struggled to get the correct exsposure. I quite liked having F22 and iso 100 which made the background behind the aintlers go real dark why keeping the aintlers and skull really white. It highlighted the shadows which I thought was cool. Whereas when I had the correct exsposure or used auto the grass was too obvious.
I wanted to get closeup photos of ducks but I couldnt get close enough as the zoom onthe camera wasnt enough. When I transfered the photos from the Sd card I also lost most of my photos as I moved my images rather than exsported them. I was able to restore most of them but some were pixilated. I also struggled to use the camera and found getting the correct exsposure and iso right. This is why most of my images were too dark or too light. With the photos of the still life in my house I struggled to not have blurry photos as my house is quite dark inthe winter months and I didnt have a tripod to photograph.
In shoot 2 I continued exsploring my theme using Kenneth Josephson as my artist model.
Key features of Kenneth Josephson work:
Black and White
A smaller image inthe forground which is related to the background.
My favourite images are when he portrays time and the changes of time. Those who are still here and those who have passed.
I like the idea of how old photos keep the memories within them, they remind us of old times. I believe we dont remember a landscape but instead its the memories which make the places so special. Its the people that make a house feel like 'home'.
All black and white images have been adjusted using photoshop.
This shoot was taken at my grandparents house in Oamaru bay Coromandel. I enjoyed taking photos using the old photos from our photo album. It was special seeing the photos of my brothers when they were younger and my grandpa before he past away when I was young. I struggled to get the small image inthe forefront to be in foccus as well as the background and from this I have learned I need to use a greater arpeture. I quite liked having my photos in black and white as it helped show that these images are from the past. I am thinking of having all my works with old photos as black and white and the newer photos in colour to resemble present day on my board at the end of the year. To provide contrast and comparison. It was interesting to compare the old fishing photos as it resembles the change in our fishing stocks, 10 pounders were common and crayfish everywhere. Nowdays when im diving we are lucky to get a craysfish and even enough snapper for dinner.
In this shoot I also played with Shutter speed and the different ways I could cature moving objects.

Reflection, Overall I found this shoot challenging with lighting as it was natural light cooming in from an angle. It was challenging to minimise shadows.Lighting is a challenging as my house is very dark and our decks are all covered. Next time I might need to set up a table inthe drive way or get someone to hold a torch for me. I prefered my images in black and white and next time I would make them less busy.

Evaluation
I found lighting challenging again inthis shoot I got my mum to hold a light above me however it was still challenging with shadows on the smaller photos and from me. I prefered my photos with only one small photo and the background other wise it got to much and was messy.

Do you have a clear theme and direction? What needs to be improved / refined?
No, I don't have a clear theme as it is so broad. However from these shoots I understand that I enjoy photographing towns and places and photographs of my family over doing still life photography.
I quite like natural photographs however I am also very interested in layering and how portraying a deeper meaning to my photographs.
Conventions
Is there a range of the following in your work on the layout spread? Highlight what you currently have.
Camera control
Range of depth of field, small and large
I think I have some range of depth but I need more close ups most of my images are far away.
Shutter speed
My images on my half board dont really show a difference in shutter speed however the one with the car was moving so I used a small shutter speed to capture the car frozen. I also played alot with taking photos of seagulls. And capturing there movement in frozen and blurred.
Lighting
I did not play with lighting.
Composition
I didnt use composition however I just took a range of photos until I found an angle I liked.
Framing
Perspective

Camera Angles
- Bird’s Eye Angle
- High Angle
- Eye-level Angle
- Low Angle/ Worm’s Eye Angle
-Camera shots

- Mid Shot
- Full Shot
- Long Shot
- Extreme Long Shot
From the above list what conventions do you need to focus on for your new work?
Playing with different shots I would like to have more close up and exstreme close up shots. I also think I need to play around with angles, perspecitve and framing and depth of field.
Is your work technically strong? Exposure, colour cast etc. What needs improvement?
I dont think my work is strong I didnt use a large enough range of ideas of techniques. I need to think more about the composoition of the photos before I take them.
Artist models.
Can you see the use of artist models to generate original work, which are obvious?
Is there clear use of artist models (obvious), Explicit?
The one with the boat as the background and my dad with the crayfish is somewhat linked to jerry takagawa but I feel I needed to blur the background to link more to his work. My other photo with my grandpa and brothers sitting onthe couch also links to kenneth Josephson.
Do you need to further explore the use of artist models to explore in your work? Why
Yes I need to use more artist models to increase my ideas and knowledge.
Are implicit artist models explained in your workbook?
I think in kenneth josephson there is a clear link to my photographs however in my still life I dont think mine linked as clear to the artist models.
Ideas
Have you got a range of ideas?
Not really however I have ideas of what I want to do next. I want to play with objects in locations that wouldnt normally be there to portray how the different parts of my life are interlinked. I want to have a shoot where I have gumboots onthe beach and jandals onthe farm. And play with moving other objects to locations where you wouldnt normally exspect them.
Can you see how your ideas are developing?
I think I see some improvements in my work but not enough.
What ideas need further exploration, refinement to make them stronger?
Meaning behind my work and theme what I want people to see when they see my work. More creativity to my work.
What are your most innovative and creative aspects of your photographs?
I dont think I have any creativity to my work at this stage.
What are some new ideas, potential options you could use?
Layering of multiple photos together. Playing with transparency. Lighting. Photographing at different times during the day.
Goals
What do you need to do better for your next assessment? Please set some goals.
I need to link my work more to my artest models so they are more directly related. I need to make my work more abstract and creative. More memorable. Play with lighting, depth, angles and colour. I would quite like to play with blurring.
What grade are you aiming for, 2.2 & 2.3
I really want excellence
Look at the marking schedule and evidence required for the standards. Level 2
Evaluate your work. Is there anything you need to do to reach that criteria for the mark you want?
I need to develop and improve my ideas. I need to show progression of my work and knowledge. I need to refine my work so it all links together.
