The concert band is the primary ensemble for most music students. It provides the base for all other musical endeavors outside of class and teaches the necessary skills to perform at the highest level possible. Our concert band is made up of freshmen through seniors and performs a wide variety of music. The group performs on the Fall Concert (for Tri 1 students), the December Concert, the Mid-Winter Concert, and the Spring Concert. Basketball pep band is also a graded portion of this class.
Concert band does include an extra time commitment from the students and I appreciate the understanding and support you provide so they are able to participate fully and get the most out of their band experience. A few things you may want to know to help plan for the year:
Pep Band: All concert band students are required to participate in Pep Band. Each grame is individually graded. Note: work is not an excused absence. Time off requests should be submitted early as all of the pep band dates for the year are on our calendar on the HOME page.
Concerts/Performances: This is a performance based class and as such, all concerts and performances are mandatory. They are the "final exams" if you will, and it is critically important that all band members are at all performances. ANY ABSENCES NEED TO BE COMMUNICATED AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE FOR AN ALTERNATE ASSIGNMENT TO BE CREATED. ALTERNATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE GRADED BASED ON PERFORMANCE ABILITY AND PREPARATION BUT STUDENTS TECHNICALLY CAN EARN UP TO 100% OF THE ORIGINAL GRADE.
Solo/Ensemble: Solo and Ensemble is an event where our students are highlighted in various settings. This is an aptional event that students prepare for independetly of the class. It is not included in our grading.
If you are a student in band you will need to keep up with the music by practicing at home. This is your homework for the class and it is necessary to ensure we have the best performances possible. To assist you with your practicing, keep up to date on Google Classroom with recordings of our cuirrent band pieces. See below for band recordings to hear examplary examples of university or professional wind bands.
