Students and families
We are excited to remind you about a fantastic opportunity from the State of California: CalKIDS (California Kids Investment and Development Savings Program).
The CalKIDS program automatically creates a college savings account with an initial deposit (up to $1,500 for eligible students) for millions of eligible California children, including students who qualify as low-income, foster youth, or unhoused.
This is FREE money for your child's future education and career training, and it is waiting to be claimed! What You Need to Do
The money has been deposited into accounts established in your child's name, but you must claim the account online to access the funds.
1. Visit the Official CalKIDS Website:
Go to CalKIDS.org and click on "Claim Account" or "Get Started."
2. Gather Your Information:
To claim your child's account, you will typically need:
Your Child's Date of Birth
Your Child's Statewide Student Identifier (SSID): This is a 10-digit number.
If you do not know your child's SSID, you can often find it on a report card, transcript, or school portal.
The County where your child was enrolled on the applicable Fall Academic Census Day (for students).Key Facts About CalKIDS
It's Automatic Enrollment: Eligible students are enrolled automatically; you just need to claim the account.
It's Free Money: The initial deposit is from the State—you do not need to contribute your own money (though you can link the account to a ScholarShare 529 plan later to save more).
It's for Higher Education: The funds can be used for qualified expenses at community colleges, universities, vocational schools, and professional schools across the country.
We strongly encourage all eligible families to visit CalKIDS.org today to claim your child's CalKIDS account and take the first step toward securing their educational future.
If you have any questions about the program, eligibility, or the claiming process, please visit the CalKIDS.org FAQ section or contact CalKIDS directly through their website.
