Description:
*NOTE: This classroom can be made for any grade level from K-8 if you add or take away things based on the age group. For example, if it's kindergarten, I would add the wooden blocks but take away the carpet for grades 6-8.
This classroom is a Montessori classroom for all grade levels. It meets the needs, interests and learning diversity of students by providing many different spaces to learn. For example, the classroom is divided into sections based on the subject and topic the students are learning. The students are constantly moving around the classroom and using different materials to advance their learning. The Montessori method is "student-led and self-paced but guided, assessed, and enriched by knowledgeable and caring teachers, the leadership of their peers, and a nurturing environment" (American Montessori Method). Furthermore, the Montessori method allows for improved academic performance, creativity and social emotional health. According to statistics, "in one study, children who attended a Montessori program showed better performance on creativity tasks compared to children schooled in Freinet—an alternative form of education developed in the early 1900" and "in addition to superior academic outcomes, randomized control design studies also found positive impacts on socio-emotional measures when comparing children in Montessori preschool and elementary classrooms to children in control groups." (American Montessori Method). In order for this classroom to run smoothly, the teacher is expected to uphold the classroom rules, demonstrate how the learning materials are used and keep the classroom organized. The classroom is connected to the mission of "fostering curiosity, mindfulness, and acceptance among our students by providing an engaging learning environment that allows all students to explore parts of themselves, each other, and the world around them" by allowing a hands-on approach to learning. Not only do students learn about the world around them when utilizing classroom materials, but they also learn about themselves and classmates with the Montessori method.
