Description: This classroom meets the needs, interests and learning diversity of its students by offering many different resources. These resources include the calm corner and positive affirmations station. The calm corner allows students to check in with themselves, while regulating their emotions. It includes mindfullness practice, along with breathing exercises. Calm corners have shown that "negative student behaviors decreased as a result of the implementation of the classroom calm down corner" and "the emergence of social-emotional learning (SEL) and trauma-informed practices have helped educate students on how to self-regulate (Thompson, 2021.)." Along with our school advocacy of mental health and wellness, this classroom prioritizes inclusion and SEL learning. The theme of the classroom is inclusion which is shown through the book choices, posters and postive affirmation cards. The classroom supports our school mission of "fostering curiosity, mindfulness, and acceptance among our students by providing an engaging learning environment that allows all students to explore parts of themselves, each other, and the world around them" by starting with inclusion and teaching each student to love themselves/be kind to themselves. By teaching them to kind to themselves, then they can be kind to others.
