Communication Strategy #2: Back-to-School Parent Questionnaire
My approach to communicating with caregivers focuses on building strong, positive partnerships through consistent and open communication. I believe communication should be clear, respectful, and proactive so families feel included and confident in supporting their child’s education. This reflects William Glasser’s Choice Theory, which highlights the need for belonging and connection, and Haim Ginott’s belief in using respectful language that values each child and family. I chose to create an introduction letter and a back-to-school questionnaire because they set the foundation for these relationships. The introduction letter allows me to warmly welcome families, share my teaching philosophy, and show that I value collaboration. The questionnaire gives caregivers a chance to share important information about their child’s interests, strengths, and needs, helping me understand each student more deeply. Together, these tools create open communication from the very beginning of the school year and reflect my belief, supported by Alfie Kohn’s idea of the classroom as a community, that teachers and families share responsibility for student growth.
