June 2025
Dear Sixth-Grade Student,
During the summer it is important you make some time for reading as you prepare for a challenging English Language Arts curriculum. This summer you have a recommended book to read: “Fish in a Tree” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Check your local library or bookstore for a copy, or use your favorite eBook source.
The purpose in asking you to read over the summer is to build on your appreciation and enjoyment of reading, as well as sharpen your comprehension and fluency skills. You are not required to submit a written assignment upon your return to school in the fall. However, coming to class having read the same text allows all sixth graders to start the year with a common focus for thinking, discussing, and sharing during the first weeks of instruction. My suggestion is to read “Fish in a Tree” a few weeks before school begins so that your thoughts are fresh. I realize many of you have already read this book. Please make time to read it a second time so that you are ready to participate in class discussions. If you enjoy inspirational realistic fiction stories such as “Wonder,” “Because of Winn-Dixie” and “Esperanza Rising,” then you’ll enjoy “Fish in a Tree.” This well-written narrative touches on themes such as friendship, bullying, courage, and perseverance.
In addition to “Fish in a Tree,” read as many books as you can – fiction and nonfiction. Involve your parents, and have them read along with you. Use the reading log on the back of this letter (or create your own), and/or consider keeping a reading journal to collect your thoughts and ideas as you read. Bring both your reading log and journal on Sept. 4, 2025 – the first day of school.
I look forward to working with you throughout the 2025-26 school year. Have a wonderful summer!
Sincerely,
Mr. Lander
