Specials (Art, Music, and Gym) Schedule
Below are the days your child will receive Art, Music and Gym. We work on a 6 day cycle. The first day of school was Day 1. We count from 1-6 and start over. Please note- If there is a holiday or snow day, the sequence continues after the day off. That way the special area classes don't get short changed for days off. Please note that when it is Gym day, your child must wear sneakers. The floor in the gym is waxed and sneakers are the least damaging and the safest for your child.

Folders
Your child’s folder is our means of communication. Your child will bring home class work, homework, and notices in it. It must be emptied and returned every day. Homework must be completed and sent back in the folder. Any notes, order forms, money, etc., must be placed in an envelope, labeled with your child’s name and what it is for and placed in this folder.
Homework
Students will have homework Monday through Thursday. If there is something special going on that day, no homework will be assigned on that given day. Homework is to be done in pencil (unless otherwise instructed), neatly done, and their name s must be on it.
I expect children to complete their homework every night and return it on a regular basis. If something happens at home and the homework was not completed, please send in a note explaining the situation and I will allow the extension.
Please review the directions on the homework pages with your child to ensure your child understands what has to be done.
*** Homework is a review of the concepts taught for the day. If you find that your child is struggling, please jot me a note and I will happily sit with him/her one-on-one to reinforce the concept.
Classroom Newsletter
You will receive a NEWSLETTER every Monday. The purpose of the newsletter is to keep you abreast of our schedule and of some of our classroom activities. There may be pictures, suggestions, requests, general information and news of the week’s activities. Please read the newsletter and any papers that come home. Your child’s backpack will contain a folder filled with papers EVERY DAY. Your child develops responsibility by observing those around them. Please help him/her by emptying their folder and responding to the information as necessary. Review papers or talk about the daily work as much as possible.
Snack/Lunch Money
Please send in a small, healthy snack and drink for you child every day. We have snack every morning for about 15 minutes. Please remember this is a snack, not a meal. Please keep snack separate from lunch.
I f your child is bringing in money for snacks at lunch, please have it sent into school in a sealed envelope with the words “Snack Money” written on the outside of the envelope. Please write your child’s name on the envelope as well.
Absences
Call into the school if your child will be absent.
Please arrange to pick up your child’s work, if at all possible.
Please send a note with your child when returning to school explaining absence.
An absence is considered illegal unless we are informed in writing.
Birthdays
You are all welcome to send in goodies for your child’s birthday. We celebrate birthdays during our snack time, which happens to be in the morning. The goodies can be dropped off at the Main Office anytime before 10:30 a.m. Please send in a note a week before so I know to expect them and I can notify a parent whose child is allergic to wheat products. We have 10 students in our class this year. Whether or not treats are present, we will be sure to take the time to honor your child’s special day.
Transportation
If you are going to be picking up your child up at school for any reason, you must send a note with your child or call the school in advance. No child will be kept from riding the bus by the child’s word alone.
When you pick up your child, you must first stop and check in at the office. This is an important policy and is for your child’s protection.
Students are not allowed to change from one bus to another except in special situations and only in writing. A note must be sent prior to any changes.
Playground
We try to go out on the playground each day. Play clothes and sturdy shoes are recommended. No flip-flops. During the cold weather, mittens or gloves, hats, boots, and scarves are mandatory. If you send your child to school with boots on, please send in a pair of sneakers in their backpack. We will help them change into them when they come to and leave to go home.
I must ask you to LABEL everything that you send in to school that needs to be returned home. This includes clothing, books, notes, etc. Children often bring the same or similar items to school and can’t remember their own belongings. Think twice about sending anything valuable that might be broken, lost, or damaged. We can not be responsible for items that are valuable.

Reading instruction will take place on an individual basis and in small groups for Guided Reading. This is when kids are grouped by similar levels to read together in small groups and work on reinforcing individual needs- while the other children work on seat work/center work or independent reading. Each child will continue to move through the levels at his or her own pace.
*Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessments are conducted in June to note that progress is being made. Running records are used as well as an informal measure to help direct instruction.
Wilson Fundations is our district’s language arts program. It is a systematic and explicit phonics approach to reading and spelling with phonics. We will be utilizing parts of the program in a whole group situation to review vocabulary, spelling, sight words, handwriting, and grammar. It is taught through a sequence of language skills, a multi-sensory approach, and a word-analysis approach. We will combine this instruction with the reading of good literature, which is just as important for your child’s development.
Writer’s Workshop
We will be using the Lucy Calkin's Units of Writing.
In helping the children learn to express their ides in writing, they are encouraged to use thinking maps and to approximate the spelling of words (kid spelling). We will write in our journals on a weekly basis and also work on writing projects.
*Writing benchmarks will be given 4 times a year to note progress and ability.
The students will work on:
* create a story with a beginning, middle and end
* begin to use writing conventions (capitalization/punctuation/grammar)
* create illustrations to correspond with written words
