Independent Reading is a purposeful place to practice and apply authentic reading skills, build learning stamina and volume, and transfer knowledge from one context to another. It is also a place for students to explore and build interest and passion to develop life-long reading habits. All 8th grade students are expected to have an independent reading book at all times, and to read at least 90 minutes per week, in school and outside of school.

“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn't be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” -- Roald Dahl
