Course grading:
Expected distribution of grades: (This can change depending on the work assigned)
TOTAL POINTS EARNED /TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS = QUARTER GRADE
We will have required class assignments that will be completed during class. I will let you know during each class if an assignment is expected to be completed during class time or finished at home. All assignments will be checked, graded and I will provide feedback to guide your learning. It is extremely important that you read/listen to my feedback and make any necessary adjustments. Your grade for many of the assignments will reflect the adjustments that you made based on my feedback. So, the more corrections that you make, the more your grade will improve. Each assignment is worth a predetermined number of points/grade based on our rubrics and World Language standards. Therefore, you are expected to complete each assignment to the best of your ability, submit it by its due date, and seek help early, should you need it. It is up to you to decide what grade you are satisfied with for each assignment. I generally will NOT accept assignments submitted past its due date. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of practicing the suggested material consistently and thoroughly. However, I understand that sometimes, things happen. If this is the case for you for any given assignment, please send me an email immediately. Be proactive! If you anticipate a conflict, let me know so that I can work within your constraints. All assessments reflect the work covered in class and reviewed at home. If you understand the assignments, you will experience success on the assessments. My biggest interest is to see your improvement. For this reason, there will be times when you will be able to request to be reassessed once you believe you have learned the material. In these cases, your reassessment grade will override the previous one.
Class participation and practice is extremely important. I keep track of everything you do in class. Volunteering answers, asking relevant questions, and active participation are simple ways of letting me know that you are engaged. During class, I will also ask questions, and polls regarding the topic being discussed. These questions/polls will allow me to evaluate your level of understanding to determine how I need to adjust my lessons to help you succeed.
Make-ups:
It is your responsibility to see that you are current on all assignments, tests, etc., not the teacher’s. If you are absent, I expect you to follow our Google Classroom schedule. Upon your return, I expect to see all the work due up to, and including, that date unless you have made prior arrangements with me. If you are absent during an assessment, you should expect to be assessed the day you return. Please understand that being absent on the day prior to the test/quiz is NOT an excuse. Most of my assessments are based on a cumulative period of time for which you were likely present and you will have prior knowledge of all assessments as they will be also posted in Google Classroom ahead of time. Makeup’s for exams are to be done upon your return from a legal absence. Any exceptions must be discussed with me. CUTTING CLASS = ZERO.
In order to avoid problems, make use of my e-mail address at nancy.beiner@wcsdny.org.
Failure to hand in a project on time will result in an unfavorable grade. You will have plenty of time to do any assigned projects and to do them right!
Extra help:
Please refer to my schedule on this page for the times that I have designated as " Office Hours/Extra help" As soon as you feel that you did not understand something, schedule an appointment to meet with me either during our synchronous session or via e-mail.
General Classroom Guidelines and Expectations
1. Come to class prepared every day. Organize all the materials you will need ahead of time. I know that you are used to hearing school bells. My suggestion is to set an alarm for each of your classes, especially for your first class of the day.
2. Be on time and ready to learn. Be prepare to participate in class. Many times, our “do now” will consist on coming into the class and having a conversation IN SPANISH! This will count towards your engagement grade.
3. Take notes! When I write on the whiteboard, it is to clarify a point. Make sure that you copy it clearly so that you may review from it later.
4. Participate! In Spanish! Use Spanish whenever possible. It is the only way to practice and excel in the language. Learn the common classroom expressions; they will help avoid the need for English.
5. Make the most of your time in class. Go to the bathroom or drink water or any outside business before or after class.
6. Respect yourself, the teacher and your classmates. Profanity will not be tolerated in any language. Speak in a courteous manner. Dress appropriately and stay focused.
7. All work is to be completed INDEPENDENTLY and WITHOUT ASSISTANCE of any kind unless I have specifically given you permission. Any work submitted deemed to be copied, done with the help of a translating device, software, or APP will be considered plagiarized and will receive a zero and reported to ALL Honor Societies and the school administration for consequences as stated in the Student’s Code of Conduct and/or honor societies bylaws. If using Artificial Intelligence (AI), make sure that you quote each part of the assignment that represents information derived from AI along with a screenshot of the information from the AI site or device. I will only assess information that exemplifies your own skills and knowledge. Trust yourself and have confidence in what you know. If you don't know something, ask me first. If you need help citing work derived from AI, I am happy to teach you. AI can be a very helpful tool when used correctly and with honesty. Your integrity is worth a LOT more than any grade will.
